Well this is my understanding although I can’t say it’s the right one…
Freedom is not given to us by anyone. God gave us free will and with that will we make our own freedom.

i interpret it as meaning that man is inherently and fundamentally free - that it is a birthright and can only be limited/imposed upon by others

My personal analysis of this quote is that Freedom is natural, and no one has the right to take that away. Nature is free and we are a part of nature.

If someone were to take away your right to free speech, how would they do it? Tape your mouth? but you could write your thoughts. Cut off your hands? but you could dance in the streets? Kill you? That doesn’t stop you either (for example Dr. King.) The freedoms expressed in the Constitution are one expression of the natural rights we all have, and they can not be denied or taken away by force of arms or rule of law.
