You need an someone who knows what they are doing to have a look at it and see how bad the damage is. It might be recoverable but it also may not. I run a backup program such as Acronis True Image (or Nortons) to backup my whole computer to an external hard drive. I have had an crash and i lost my hard drive but fortunately i was able to restore everything to exactly the way it was with the software on a new hard drive. It is worth the investment and gives you peace of mind.

No, you need a new internal hard drive on your computer, you can also try to get the damaged hard drive repaired. From http://fixit.in

what needs to be done all depends on what actualy happened to the hdd. If the drive is physicly damaged then you need to get a new drive… if windows was corupted or some other external force deleted the hdd, then you should be able to just get a copy of windows and reinstall it on the pc and then you will be one step closer to having a pc that will do what you want again.

Yes, it’s not difficult if you are careful. I did so on my old mac power book, not because of damage but because I wanted a bigger disk. That one was built very thin, so it was a bit squeezy and had to be done neatly. But it worked fine.

Then have another look at the removed disk. I once had a disk breakdown which depended on bearing problems, the friction was simply too much to get the stuff spinning by that weak motor. I had it externally powered and “helped” it physically to start (actually with a wooden grill stick, lol…), and got it spinning. A bit surprised, I looked for cables and was lucky to find the right one, connected it “on the fly” and was lucky enough to copy the entire disk (that was even a SCSI disk which is not supposed to be connected on the fly. But it worked). Then I scrapped the disk. But that was a 5.5″ disk. I have never dissembled a 2.5″ disk, only moved them around.

When my old hard drive was about to stop working, it started making a clicking noise and a couple minutes later it stopped working. Now i got a new hard drive and installed vista and everything else as usual. It was working fast and very silent. But after a couple of hours of use, it began to make a light clicking now like before. and its coming from the hard drive. i dont want to turn it on because i think it might damage the drive. why is it doing this?

normaly it just means that there is a faulty drive… if you got the last one new then it should be under warenty.. I would get it replaced again.
