Carbon Offsetting?
What is Carbon Offsetting mean to you?
For me it is a double edge sward.
If for example you are running a business and there is a critical process in the business that produces huge green house emissions, yet you can not change that process because it would mean the end of the business; Carbon Offsetting can be a good environmental tool. In this situation that green house emissions are going to be produced, there is no way around it. By paying someone else, who can, to lessen their emissions as atonement for your own unavoidable use, you are helping to reduce overall emissions in the world.
However if you are a millionaire living way beyond the average person of your society, and way way way beyond the average person in the world, any Carbon Offsetting you might do is nothing more then you paying for the privilege to pollute the world. It is far more effective to reduce your own uses rather then paying to sustain your use.
I also see Carbon Offsetting becoming a new tool for the “Haves” to distinguishes them selves form the “Havenots.” I see a world coming where carbon credits will be as common place as use tax. Every one will be given a certain amount of credits to use in say a year and after that, they will have to either pouches offsets or do with out. Like every system of this kind that has come before it, the “Haves” will make out, while the “Havenots” will suffer. I see this coming:
“Sorry Miss Jones, but where going to have turn off your electricity because you have used up your yearly allotment of credits and have not opted to preaches offsets”
“Sure think Mr Gore, your heated pool is just fine, it says here your Offset account is up to date”
