well to go to england is easy i guess just hang around in london mostly but hotels in london are very expensive…
France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus so that you will have visited all the mediterranean countries along with Spain. If you like the idea make sure you come to Greece after April so that you’re here for the summer!
i can see why you want to travel being from “the couv”… oh yes i know the glory from which you hail. I am from an even more gloooooooorious place Longview!!!!!!!! ugh. I now live in Philly (eh yo!) but have been traveling a bit myself in recent years. Personally I recommend staying south of the equator. Things are just cheaper down there. Of coarse you’re exp. will be much different. You will see more poverty, etc. but the exp is very rich. I was in africa for a month this last summer and it was amazing! Or you could be like every other schmoh and go on a “european vaca” and blow thousands of $$$. Depends on the exp you want. good luck in whatever you choo-choo-choose! (quoting ralph wiggum)
my niece is doing this at this moment she got some sponsors and they can check were she is any time in wo bist du jetzt.com
What allot of people here do is go “inter-railing” around Europe, you can essentially get anywhere and it would be a backpacking type dealey, as for planning tips the first thing you want is comprehensive insurance, so if you find yourself somewhere with no money and no work you can still get home.
In Ireland the best places to visit are; Kerry which is apparently the most beautiful place in Ireland, Dublin our capital and where the Guinness brewery is hehe, Cork, I hate Cork with a passion but it’s a nice place and Galway which is a very bohemian place. I strongly recommend you go to Granada in Spain it is beautiful and you could always give Portugal a go too, Praia De Rocha in Portugal was nice, very quiet though. Also Thailand is a must, I highly recommend Phuket, I’ve been to Thailand 8 times and nearly every time I’ve gone to Phuket. Also I have some powerful friends over there who can help you out if you have any problems. As for Australia, Sydney is very expensive and I hear Melbourne is a great place. I’d go to the west coast Of Australia if it was me, but then I grew up there. There are loads of kickass little places on the west cost, the main two being Fremantle and Margeret River, the town I grew up in is Bunbury but there’s not much to see there. I have heard nothing but good about Berlin in Germany. You should definitely go to Alaska and Canada just because they are so near. Cornwall in England is nice, very funny accents and there’s a surfer town called New Quey that gets very hot weather in the summer. Oh sorry Wexford in Ireland is a great place for summer weather and Belfast is worth a visit just to see. You can take day busses or trains from Dublin to see anywhere in Ireland. My gf was in Barbados recently and highly recommends it. If you do get over here I’ll bring you to the best pubs in Dublin for Guinness ;)

Ill do it one day, and ill get chills of excitment.
I am planning on taking 3 to 5 years for this trip. That may lengthen. Dan you have some time. I need to pay off about $6000.00 worth of medical bills before I go. Hoping I will be able to leave in 6 or 8 months.

You are right! Italy added.
Italy is very expensive, so much so it’s actually prevented me from going. Sorento looks extremely beautiful though, but you’ll need a nice chunk of money to enjoy it. As far as I remember it’s a teeny lil fishing village…
You absolutely have to go to Granada in Spain, it’s sooo beautiful, you must go!!!

Wooo hooo! *Finds Shizuko and packs a second case to compensate for lack of room.*
How about Alaska and Hawaii?
I know they are states of the America, but you could say spend a month in America and go to the huge touristy places without wanting to travel to entirely different places - Alaska and Hawaii are far enough from mainland USA to be considered separate countries for this purpose.

Alphabetized them for ya. ;), you can always change back to the original if you like, and also how about Hong Kong? You’ll be in that area.
I plan to visit Hong Kong. But it is part of China so, does not count as it’s own country.
hey sully it’s me i think this is a great plan. I hope my bro can help you make this trip, and i hope on day to join you, and so does he, he offered you a little bit of advice, go as clockwise as possible, and that learn the laws of where your going next, don’t take any law for granted alright? even if it seems so stupid to you. always obey it. as for his connections, he will have to get out of the hospital to contact them all, but he is writing letters to them to see if they are still in their homes and what not so i hope they will provide free lodging in their contries of choice he has friends in Italy, China, Japan, Germany, Russia and a few others that i can’t remember so….. good luck
Wow! Tell him thanks for me. I was planning to go as clockwise as possible. It actually makes the plane tickets cheaper… I learned that working for the airlines but, still can not figure out why. I suppose it will also be easer on time lag. I think I am going to Ireland first. I will try to live there and tour the rest of Europe from there.
Hay… Where did Shizuko’s replies about stowing away go???

Pst… can I come with you to Brazil and Finland and Ireland? OH PLEASE! *looks up hopefully*
:P I wish you the best of luck.
Hi! Great plan!
I lived in Taiwan. It can be quite easy to get a job in the after school cram schools teaching English. I would suggest getting out of Taipei and going to Taichung or Gaushung. Less competition, more likely to find freindly folks to take you in. If you head to a hostel in one of those cities, you should be able to ask around. Sometimes businessmen who own restaurants with apartments above them will let you stay there for English lessons.
While you are there, if you have time and $, take the train round to Canding and up to HuaLien. Canding (in the south) is beautiful tropics with points where you see ocean on both sides. Hualien (east side) is great place to pick up marble vases– and such beautiful landscape– cliffs, rivers, waterfalls– just beautiful!!
Most of my friends there are pretty settled in with kids and all… not up to taking in strangers like they did when we were young.
That sounds awsume! Can you tell me what the wages are like? And the cost of living? I am looking for what countries to base out of for several months while I tour the others on weekends or vacation time. Is Taiwan a good candidate for this? Bear in mind, I will need to earn enough money for my next big jump. I will need to be able to save about $3000 to $5000 in about 3 months on top of my expenses. That money is to cover plane tickets and first months bills in the new place. I am also asking for help on a formal schedule that I can present to possible sponsors.

Oh, and Israel too?
:P
Seriously, though… that trip sounds like it’s going to be amazing.
Taiwan would be a good place for that. Room and board can be quite cheap, and you can parlay your work at the cram schools into tutoring sessions that pay well. Also, they are modern enough to have a lot of amenities, and yet not too expensive (if you get out of Taipei).
I was able to live there for a year, and save enough for side trips to South Korea, Thailand, Malasia and Singapore. ( for the last three, I flew into Bangkok, stopped over at Koh Samui (Lamai beach), then took a bus to Kuala Lampur and a train on down to Singapore. I have heard that Malaysia is even tighter than when I was there– do not carry bags for people and go through the custom lines alone, even if you are traveling with other people you have met. I met folks who traveled with me who then went on to Indonesia and mainland China, but I was saving up for a Vespa because at the time I was thinking of making Taiwan a permanent home.
Here’s an ad for a job, to give you an idea: http://www.esljobsworld.com/esl-jobs/…
just FYI: My avatar is a temple peak from Gaushung (which I’ve also seen transliterated Koushiung) Taiwan.
Cool. That is good to hear. I will start my base list now that I have 2. Do you need a degree for the teaching English thing? I do not have a college degree yet.
Yes Mittens it will be! And very educational too. I am sure after the trip I will have no problems finding work. If nothing els I will make a great travel planner… LOL

I’ve known people to go and teach English without it; a lot of places are happy with a native speaker, but you might not be able to command as much $$. If you can take some courses to get a certificate before you leave, that will help. Having a piece of paper, even if it isn’t a degree can help.
If you go to Asia, look into the Lonely Planet phrase books- they are small, easy to carry in a pocket, and I got by a lot by pointing to phrases and letting people read the text as well as using the pronunciations.
In Taiwan and Singapore, I stayed with friends….
… but in Bangkok Thailand, I recommend the Muangphol Building– not anything fancy, but safe and inexpensive– in 2003 it was running around $15/night, I think, and they have monthly rates too…

Hush Puppy Shoes/Wolverine has some Taiwan connections. Maybe you could ask them for some sponsorhsip.
Can I say if you go to the UK then don’t just go to London, make sure you go up north. Going up north is like going to a different place. Alos in Europe Italy is very picturesque and historical but so is Germany and Austria. Austria is good for both history and scenery and Germany is very interesting, with lots of good beer. Also check the european ticketmaster websites for cheap concerts of fairly famous US and UK bands. I’ve seen the Killers in Colonge (nicer than Berlin) for $20 with only about 100 people and that was in 2006.
Vietnam is great and vert cheap but make sure you go to Saigon (lively and friendly) and Hanoi (typically Vietnamese but not as friendly). I live in Saigon and I love it. Vietnam has such an amazing history but if you do come this way make time for Cambodia it can be quite upsetting, it helps to read up about the history of the place a good book for Cambodia is “First they killed my father”.
New Zealand is amazing too but you need at leat six weeks to see all the important stuff.
Enjoy whereever you go!
Thank you, I do plan to visit all those places. I will take your advise on Vietnam. I will also post here when I will be there so you could show me some of the sites.
I’ve been thinking about Russia too– only saw Moscow and Kemerovo, my plan is to hit St. Petersburg in 7 years.
Here are some links I found useful:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/GoListDeta…
http://www.go-russia.com/ — Peace travel is very reputable; you can get cell phones, etc. and renting an apartment can sometimes be cheaper than staying in a hotel.
We stayed at the Ukraina, which was not cheap but really cool– one of the old, historical buildings. If you email directly and ask for the cheapest rate, you may do better than going through online services or travel agency.
For eating authentic food cheaply, I recommend the Moo-Moo chain, spelled My-My in Russian– there is one on Arbat Street (a vendor street well-known in Moscow). Look for the big cow. It is cafeteria style, so you can also get your food by pointing, which works out well if your language skills are minimal.
Two things that we weren’t old about but we really enjoyed in Moscow were: a boat ride on the Moskva http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g29… and, if you’re into art, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Art– they have copies of all of the great works of art (from when their citizens were not allowed to travel) and then this huge collection of original French impressionists.
I do not think it would be easy to make this a base, since I think it would be difficult to find a job. However, I did meet a guy there from Tennesee who was working on construction of a golf course, so who knows.
hey sounds like your plan is coming a long well, but don’t move too fast for me i still want to meet you in some of these places someday ok that is my mission, to get over my fear of people so i can see the thing that we walk around on everyday. Ziza wantss to come too, i know he does he said so himself so
I have written the Irish Embassy and am waiting a reply. they are pretty strict on there work visa’s and I need to either get a special purpose work/resident visa or have a company apply for one on my behalf. That means writing to a company and convincing them to hire me… Scary. But, we will see what the Embassy says in a couple days I am sure.
Well… I heard back from the Irish embassy. They told me what department to send my inquiry to as procedure has changed earlier in this year. That department (Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment) has pretty good info and instructions up on what I need to do. They also have statistics of permits submitted this year and the number that are excepted/denied. 19746 applications where submitted and only 1762 where denied, while 18002 where approved! Less then 1% refusal looks very good to me!
ooh that looks like so much fun!! i wanna go! i’ve been to: the us, caribbean, mexico, canada, tahiti, and japan.
I can not wait to just GO! This whole planning thing is kind of new to me… The more the merrier! You are welcome to join me. But, please not in the other suitcase… I am running out of extras.
Still waiting for a reply from the DETE in Ireland. Governments sure take there time!
Wow I made a promise to reply ages ago. I want to check what others wrote and then add. I’ve traveled a lot.
Reading you is like a research paper - almost done though. Got 2 more to write tonight.
Research paper? Is that a compliment or an insult… One one side it says I write well but, on the other it says it is a chore!
I will take it as a compliment! Thank you. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
It means I care and read evry post to help you. -It means I care :) and think you are awsome. I’ve traveled a lot. I believe youare very complicated. It means I will measure my words to help you. It is a compliment.
IT is a privledge to know you, so I will measure my words and hope I help.
Wow… Thanks.
Don’t WOW me, let me be in awe a little :)
My best shot at helping you is this. wow, i know Europe down to the streets, I need a sedond. I can say this- madris culture is not the same as barcelona. Madrid is Pure Spanigh, Barcelona is Catalan. My EX, now friend had an Illegal name. Catch both cultured. I did. Here i go, helping…there is more..
ok. I have to fix this keyboard. This is BS
Don’t forget Lisbon if you cross Portugual. Drive a car after London if you can. You will surpriesed at what you see. Check out Stonehenge and the old palace ruins around it.
Don’t refuse the lessons history can teach you. Those people built those settlements for a reason.
I have a collection of gargoyle images. i now send my images to my art history teachers. Catch Barcelona and Madrid. I’ve seen a lot of Spain, but I’d drop those as a must. IF you can get a car drive though to Andorra. The ride through the pyranees is exquisite. As a US Citizen, they wonder why you are there. I cought that one.
After London, catch Winchester cathedral and also Salisbury. In Spain, Madrid = museums. Barcelona, Goudi! . I met one of my favorite actors in Madrid- at the main museum. We had lunch. Definately get into the culture. Art history is a great way.
History is a favorite subject of mine. And a big part of why I promised to go on this trip to begin with.
Madrid and Barcelona have a ‘war” in soccer, but in reality, Catalonia is far more French. My ex has a forbidden name. In France, I was in a great Best Western Hotel, very French and right in the old district. Notre Dame, etc. all there. Seen it all. Definately check out chocolate mousse in France, and profiterals. I’m here if you need me.
Why don’t you visit affrica & middle east ?
If Ethiopia and South Africa aren’t parts of Africa or Israel isn’t a part of the Middle East, then it appears that all of the geography I have learned is wrong.
Heehee… Look at the list. I will hit all continents save Antarctica.
oh Sully, why are you so endearing:) Like you bunches
-n
Oh that’s wonderful!
I wish you good luck.
I say from where you are on the map, visit the location closest, and travel from east to west (or west to east) until you end up where you began by heading in one direction!!
That does make it cheaper on plane tickets… But I am going to be cutting it up into chunks do to cost and the difficulty of getting work visas for some countries.
am is prince form africa. and am looking for someone to talk about needy children

Yeah, but I have a feeling this one is of the Disney persuasion, Meaning he is poor and can sing and will be shortly discovering a long lost something or other.
My tickets are going to cost about $1300 round trip to Ireland. I am trying to see if an end on end will be cheaper or a circle trip. I suspect the circle trip.

Lol!
I am shocked to announce hat the end on end is cheaper! Saves me about $1300. So, I will be flying from PDX to DUB, DUB to HKT, HKT back to DUB, Then DUB to PDX.
There’s no reason you should be spending $1300 to go to Ireland. That’s more than I spent to go to Russia.
Also: you should consider WWOOFing at least part of the time. You don’t get paid, but you do get room and board, which will substantially cut down on your costs.
Also: if you go to Russia you NEED to go to St. Petersburg; it is so much more beautiful than Moscow.
your doing it that is soo cool i am jealous of you
Jordan, Defenitly, and Lebanon
Norway and Denmark
Finland and Nova Scotia
Well thats all i can think of, lol good luck
Thanks Coolie19!
intangiblemissxo, I think it is due to the time of year. I have worked for the airlines before and know how they do there pricing. I am purposely targeting popular travel times for a better chance of being bumped. I need to pay for 1 flight that is international so I can start doing the same thing I do for domestic flights. That and I am meeting people so all our schedules have to match. It would also be cheaper if my trip was shorter… The longer the trip the more likely the person will reschedule or miss there flight. This inconveniences the airlines and so they charge more for it.
I would go to strasbourg for a day, it’s part german and part french and you can get there by a two hour train ride from paris. They have AMAZING food. make sure you eat a tarte flambee for me :]
Wow… Thanks bluecarrotjive!

maybe this link will help.
Max… THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!
I not only looked at that site, I just talked to them on skype for about 2 hours getting every detail I needed to make a decision! I still have to square away some things here before I go. But I will be in India before summers end and moving to Thailand after that. Once I am done in Thailand I will be hitting one country with a paying job every 3 to 5 months. WOW! I am going to try to leave here ASAP! I have an insurance settlement to finish up then I am free! And that will pay for the whole startup package!
Shea and Courty! My Thailand trip is in a little jeopardy! But, I will probably be able to be there for a week in August. I AM going to be in Puckett for several months! Just possibly not August… :(
Really good to hear that chum..They just build a hugh new IT center in Dombi(not the right spelling) it’s the capital or something. Are you going to film your trip. Hey maybe get a sponser and an Agent..You’ll be a star..
I want to do something like that. But I will do it my self. With a digital cam. I plan to do a series of videos for youtube.

Update!
I am going to China! I have a job waiting for me in Shenzen. I will be getting my TEFL in Zhuhai. I leave for LA on the 6th of July and am staying with friends for a couple days. Then on the 10th I fly out to Zhuhai! I will be in Zhuhai for 1 month then, hopefully, a weeks vacation in Phucket Thailand! After that, its off to Shenzen to start work!

Don’t forget to check out manhatten! It’s a must see.
Update for every one! I am in Thailand now! Writing this in an internet cafe thats costing me 20 baht per hour! So this one is going to be short. I will type up a longer discription of everything and then cut and paste it next time I get online! Lots of cool things to tell you all but no time right now!
And at 20 baht per hour… I am not going to be modding for a little bit. When I move into an actual house with internet that will change.
OK… I am in chat for a little bit. Until my 20 Baht runs out…
See ya!
Better Update! Its long…
After flying to LA and spending a very relaxing week with some good friends Jenny & Blake I couchsurfed with some new friends. Donna and Family + CSers… They are a great crowd and introduced me to vegie food that actually tasted! It even tasted good! I got to wander around LA for a while and see a cool art exibit. Went to several free concerts and basicly had a lazy happy holliday. The whole reason I got to do that was because China has made it virtually impossible to get a visa for any purpose other then going to the Olympics. So, after changing my airfare and getting my Thai visa I have flown to Thailand. That was a long flight. LAX to TPY 12 hours. TPY to KUL 4.5 hours. KUL to HKT 1.25 hours. Plus a total of 7.5 hours in layovers.
Now I am in Phuket Thailand! (Pronounced Poo-ket! I know what you where thinking!) I stayed at the On On Hotel for 2 nights. This is a .25 star hotel… Kind of run down looking, the room has a hard bed, chair, dest, and sink. Showers and toilets are down the hall. There is no food or kitchen or hot water. Yes… Cold showers only. This place costs 180 Baht per night. Internet access is 20 B per hour. I walked all over Phuket Town. I learned the layout of the city and how to find my way. English speakers where few and far between! On the second day I found this place called Phuket Backpackers.
Phuket Backpackers is a wonderful place. It is the local hostel. Loads cleaner then On On. This place has hot running water, a kitchen, free internet, 36 inch widescreen HD flat pannel TV, softer beds! It is 200 B per night. Plus there are a lot of English speakers here! The people staying here and the hosts are awesome! The only draw back is that I have to share a room with up to 3 strangers. I have one other person in my room. Ironicly, he is from Portland! What are the odds? I think I am going to join a group of these people to the beach tomorrow. Its a 25 min bus ride that costs 30 B each way. I spend about 150 to 200 B each day on food. Really good food! Dragon fruit is good stuff but, Mangostiens are my favorit so far! Imagin a fruit that tastes like its a cranberry-lemon-orange-pinable… That does not even come close but, its the best I can do right now.
Oh ya… Incase your wondering $1.00 USD is abot 30 B (Baht). So, you can see this trip is costing me a fortune… About $10 a day. I really need a camera so I can start sending you all pics! I found one I might buy here. I need to take care of my self first but, if I come accross a spare 4900 B I will get it. Thats the cheapest one.
So begins my world trip! Let me know what you want to see and I will see it for you!
Sully, the main beaches are Naiharn, Kata, Karon, and Patong, Patong being the wildest town and nai harn the mellowist, they run north up the west coast. You are most likely to find anything you need cheaper in Patong.
Got a 7.1 MP Canon camera and a 1Gb card for 3990 B… In Patong.
Short update. I just reread this whole post. I have left Thailand and moved to China. I am now eating almost as good food for just as cheap if not a little cheaper. Rent is a lot more expensive tho… I have gotten my TEFL (that teaching thing I mentioned a year ago) and am teaching English in Tianjin China. The money is pretty good and about to become excellent! I am also setting up to be a recruiter. That will pay very well! So, if you are tired of the same old stuff at home and are a native English speaker and want something very new… Let me know. I can hook you up with a job of a life time! I have worked here for 3 months and now it is Winter holiday so, I plan to travel all over China. Trains here are really cheap. I know I said Europe was first and that I would go clockwise but… Thats not what’s happening.
I am still interested in planning tips and more places to go!
I will break from the pattern I wanted to maintain for a few years for 2 reasons. One, the money here is good. So I will save as much as possible for several years. Two, there is a school I plan on attending. After graduating I will be able to teach in ANY county! Countries that require a degree to teach English I will simply teach Martial Arts in. Or I will teach TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). So, thats the plan so far and will try to update this a little more frequently…
Getting to where I am is really not hard at all! If anyone is interested in exactly what it takes ti undergo a trip of this magnitude, please ask me and I can set you up with some awesome tools to help and great information and advice! The most shocking thing is the cost! It is NOWHERE NEAR as expensive as everyone told me before I left.
Sully you just enjoy the Life you have now .My Son was away almost 3Years China India and Africa .Every young Person should travel like this .wishing you all the best on your Journey.Im no longet slimline.Im the barbyman.com now check it out..Good luck….
