why are insects so attracted to light?

its in the middle of autumn and the cicadas arer still buzzing away as i type this…. odd isn’t it? must be the climate change messing up their behavior. there are still bugs flying around (little ones) and there are dead bugs under my ceiling lamp… the poor fellas got burned to death trying to get as close as possible to the light. why do they do this?
