okay, so i need some computer help.

i have a dell. i have no idea how old it is. i’m guessing about 2 years more or less. idk if it really matters. but anywhoo, it had like a million viruses a while back & my mothers stupid alchie husband paid some dumb alchie old dude who drank all of our whiskey to fix the problem. so he fixed it enough so that we didn’t have anything really wrong with it anymore. problem is, we originally had windows xp home edition… we couldn’t find the original CD that came with our computer when we bought it so the guy used his. i’m not that knowledgable about I.P. addresses but i think he did something with that too. The CD he used led us to having windows xp professional now. he told us that the computer was fine but no matter what to not click the automatic updates thing & he didn’t give a good explanation as to why. i started getting annoyed having to not click it & wondered if i didn’t click it then my computer software would eventually become out of date or something. idk. so i clicked it & now i can’t download the lastest version of windows media player (11… i think) & every time i go to log onto my settings it says i may be a victim of software counterfeiting & asks me if i want genuine. i want to find out how i can either delete windows professional & re-install the home edition (i finally found the CD for it) or how i can keep the professional edition & just make my computer normal again. please help. i can’t really afford to pay for someone to fix it & i know you guys are smart. thanks.

He put a stolen version of xp professional on your computer, because you didn’t have your original disk for xp home, he did you a favor in that regards. The reason he told you not to update was because the main website now knows it is stolen. You shouldn’t have done exactly what he told you not to do, that was dumb, really dumb, despite the fact he was an alcho. There’s nothing you can do that I know of unless you get another stolen version or buy the retail copy.

By stolen I mean pirated, it’s as illegal as downloading music or watching movies online, so don’t go pointing the finger unless you don’t partake in pirated material at all yourself.

The cd you found. Is it a operating system CD or a recovery CD? Should say it on it.

Well no matter what you do, you should bake that stuff up first.

You can create a duel boot on the computer, that way you don’t lose any data. But that is a more complicated thing to do.

The east thing to do is to reformat (after you back everything up) and reinstall the operating system.

All computers are a bit different and it would be to hard to explain on here. But you should search the web for instructions on how to reformat and reinstall windows. Its striate forward so you shouldn’t have any problems.

thanks. i did try too look up something on deleting professional & installing home edition once & all i found were people complaining that there was no remove option for it in the add remove programs area. but since you were saying about that whole “reformat” thing then i guess that keyword should help. ah, links? even better. thanks.

oh, by the way, when i start up my computer, i don’t remember what exactly it says being that i’m using it at the moment, but it says something about not being able to detect certain drivers. do that have anything to do with the other thing or no?

If the drivers once existed, before you did the update, they should still exist now despite the fact that your operating system was found to be pirated. It should not have deleted anything on your system.

With out seeing the computer, I would suspect that when that guy “fixed” your computer he didn’t fix it all the way and neglected to load those drivers.

Windows has a lot of drivers built into the CD, so most of the time the computer will run striate out after reinstalling it. But there is some hardware that need drives that are not on the CD. When you buy the computer from Dell they install these for you before you get the computer, but if you have to reinstall, you have to install these drivers too.

But don’t worry about that problem now, first reinstall windows, once that is done you can worry about other problems that may come up.

fourthings is not coping an attitude. The reason this jerk told you not to go to “XP Update” is because it would record your copy of XP as a bootleg copy.

To remedy the situation is to buy a legit copy of WindowsXP Professional. complete with COA (Cetficate Of Authenicity). Lowest price I have seen is at a company on the web called VON1.
