What is my nationality, and which country do i belong to?

My mom is Chinese but has an Indian grandmother and Japanese grandfather. My dad is half English and half Norwegian (my dad was raised in the uk so i wasn’t really raised feeling norweigian at all). I was born in the Uk and i have a UK passport but i went to Hong Kong when i was 3. i lived in Hong kong until i was 12 (which is why i am fluent in cantonese and can kind of read chinese (i can’t write much tho)) and when my parents divorced i followed my mom to the US where most of her family was. i’ve spent most of my time after that in the us, had all of my secondary and higher education there (which is why all my spellings are american– i write color, gray, flavor, favor etc.) but i moved back to hong kong a while ago which i where i am now. i look kinda weird… some people say i look mediterrenean and when i speak english half of what i say sounds completely british while the other half sounds completely american. If i had to do an event in the olympic games i have no idea which country i would represent, and i don’t feel patriotic towards any country. if i was told to sing my national anthem i would have no idea what to do.

WOW! How lucky you are to have such a varied and cultural life so far. As you were born in the UK and hold a British Passport that would probably, legally make you British. However, home is wherever you make it! Where do you like the best?

that’s the thing. i don’t really have a sense of belonging to any particular country and i don’t know much about the actual culture, traditions or customs of any particular one of them. if i went to any one of the countries that my parents come from ALL of the people there would think that i was a foreigner or a tourist and even if they knew, if they talked about interesting parts of their history or culture i would have no idea what they going on about… there is no country in the world i could go to without people thinking that i was a non native. i dunno… it’s just like there’s no country that i can declare myself to be a citizen of. it just feels so weird whenever i see people with tears in their eyes while they sing their national anthem or when i see awards being given at sports events or the olympic games because it’s a feeling that i’ve never had the chance to experience…

If you want to learn about specific cultures and customs why not do it now. Don’t feel bad because you have something that many people will never experience, some people never even leave their country. You belong to ‘the world’ which is a far greater club to belong to. You also have the option now to decide where you want to live, what you want to learn about and where you want to ‘belong’ to. YOU get to decide. You may be British legally but you can live anywhere and do anything. You aren’t missing out on anything, you’ve traveled to place most people can only dream about.

I’m a British citizen, but I’m certainly not patriotic. I don’t give much credence to the idea of cultures. There’s so much more to a person than the genetics which govern certain traits.

People develop and grow in such a way that the genes you inherit just don’t play a big factor in your personality (if any, this is oft-debated).

Either ignore it or savour it. No need to worry about it :)

I’m 25% Welsh, 25% Indian and 50% English (which is primarily Anglo-Norman), counting only my immediate family’s genetic factors.

I’m kind of similar. I was born in Mexico and am a third generation Mexicanon my dad’s side, but all of my Mexican great-grandparents are from Ukraine and Russia. My mom was born in Morocco but all of her family lives in Israel. When I was 7, I moved to Paris and lived there for two years. Now I am 14 and we live in Los Angeles. I have a Mexican Passport, a French Passport, an American Greencard, and I can receive an Israeli passport if I wish. I am fluent in French, Spanish, English, and Hebrew.

I guess my race is white but I’ve never exactly felt “white” because I am olive-skinned.

I have no idea what my nationality and race are!!!!
