Okay…

well anyway I know this isn’t a huge problem but if you can help that’s great.

So the thing is I have a facial paralysis which I have had since birth. It makes me look really ugly and my self-esteem is really low and all that. I am a really shy person and hate being around people I don’t know because I always make a fool of myself and I’m always worrying about what people are thinking about me and if I’m going to get bullied. So anyway my parents are pushing me to go to this Christmas Choir at my church and I wouldn’t mind going because I love singing but I’m really scared that someone will say something or I’ll make a fool of myself or that I won’t have a good time.
Can anyone help?

I think you should go and participate in that choir. If you love to sing, then that’s all that matters! Besides, if your heart’s in the right place, you won’t be singing for anyone else. Sing for YOU, and because you enjoy it! Sometimes people are heartless and say cruel things, but those people aren’t worth your time. The people that love you will always support you, even if others give you a hard time for whatever reason. Get in on that choir! If you don’t, you might regret it. Sing, honey..Sing!!!! :)

okay its all about mind set. when im scared of new people. i always go with the big easy approach. its simple. first level the playing field (think of everyone there as being equal) no one is better then anyone. second be layed back just relax nobody knows who you are yet you can be whoever you want to be. third pick your you chose who you want to be to these people, do you wanna be cool, serious, bossy, mean, you can be whoever you want to be around new people. now im not saying change your entire personality im saying be your self in a certin mood. like if you wanna look relaxed feel relaxed.

because I get so anxious when I’m around people and I always stuff up. If I try to act normal I end up trying to impress other people so they’ll focus on my words rather than my face.
Stupid reason, but yeah.

When I was a freshmen in high school, I was really really painfully shy. I wanted to sing in my church’s Christmas program, but I refused to do it if anyone would be able to see me. I actually stood at the microphone behind the curtains so no one could see my face. I had made myself so nervous before-hand, but it felt even worse to be hiding behind the curtains. I even changed songs at the last minute because I was so nervous!! It’s not like a life-changing thing..but I do look back and regret that I didn’t just go for it. You really should give yourself more of a chance!! If you want to sing in the choir, do it! Tell yourself every day that you love to sing, and nothing anybody would say to you can stop that!! :)

hmm okay so reading thats an easy one when you go to this new place bring a book that you really enjoyed it doesnt have to be somthing your reading right now just pretend your reading it… do you get what im saying if you liked the book, and you want to meet people who enjoyed it, then take it with you if theres extra time pull it out. you might get a comment on it that starts a conversation that might lead to a friendship.
drawing to just doodle on somthing somone might say thats really good.
get what im saying try and build bridges with people.

do you have a friend that might do it with you? Kind of like…the buddy system? If you had someone you trusted nearby, it might be easier.

I get what you mean…but do you think it will work? I’m only 15 and seeing as it’s a senior choir most people will be older than me..

could you possibly speak to the choir director about your nervousness? maybe he or she could kind of pair you up with another member of the choir who can kind of get you through it?

Could you get in contact with the director, or whoever’s in charge..and see if you’d be welcome in the first place? Like do they need more voices, etc? At least you would know ahead of time, instead of just showing up. That way if he said, ’sure, we can always use another soprano!’ (or whatever….)it might make you feel more confident.

besides…. I doubt you’d be the only one who’s missed a few practices. this time of year is busy for lots of people. not to mention that it’s prime flu season. i bet there might be other new people too!

well, as corny as this sounds, you are who you are. God made you for a reason and you shouldn’t be ashamed of how you look. Its just you, no matter how unfortunate the circumstances. Besides, its a church choir, so I don’t think anyone is going to make fun of you in church.
