The Divine Comedy by Dante
Crazy.Firework and I have decided to read and discuss The Divine Comedy by Dante on a post here. Anyone who would like to join us is more then welcome. Since it’s the first time anyone has tried doing this here, we are not sure exactly how it’ll work, but we’ll just start it and deal with things as they come up.
Here is some background information on The Divine Comedy:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Divi...
Copies of the book can be found here (for free):
http://www.italianstudies.org/comedy/...
There are several versions available online, so feel free to search google.com for another one if you like.
This post will be the place to ask any questions you have as you are reading the book. I guess just start the book and as you read it write down whatever questions/thoughts you have.
If you have already read it, feel free to share your thoughts, any questions you have, or help someone who has a question.
Okay, this is as far as I got ^_^ Anyone interested in doing this with us?

Sure.
Dante’s Inferno is one of the greatest things I have read in my life.
Exactly what I was thinking :D
Why would you recommend it to someone to read?
“Now go — one will within the both of us —
You the leader, you the lord and master!”
These things I said to him. When he moved on,
I entered on the rank and plunging path.”
I like this bit.
Well, you’re way ahead of me, then, lol, I’m reading it now!
and, wow, you really are psychic, I was just going to ask what your favorite part was :D
All Hope Abandon, You Who Enter Here.
Hope! It’s You!
Lol I told you…I have the sixth sense! :D
Something reeks of genius about Dante’s writing. Even translated from Italian to English, it is amazing. The writing alone is enough to recommend it, but then there is the subject matter. The Divine Comedy’s ideas were powerful enough to single-handedly shape the Christian concepts of Heaven and Hell. Few works of writing have had an impact that large.
I totally agree.
I reckon he should see someone he knows in Hell. That would make it really sad.
When your done with the Divine Comedy–
You could try reading the mystery novel “Dante Club” It’s about a killer that is recreating Dante’s hell.
Oh and by the way there was a a famous illustrator I think from last century that did amazing drawings of all of the levels of the comedy. They really make the reading come alive. Ther kidda intense, but then again so are most illustrations that are based on Dante
Thank you so much for your reply kjfritc :)
I own that book (The Dante Club), actually! I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but thank you for suggesting it.
Cool, do you remember the name of the artist? We could probably find the paintings online somewhere.
Gustave Doré
Wow, I just googled him, and yeah, his pictures are amazing.
Here is one of his paintings from Canto 1.
I especially like how The Divine Comedy uses very little metaphor. It doesn’t have to; the entire thing, the whole concept and plot is a symbol and a metaphor. There is a sense of purpose to it because of that.
Wow I just looked at those pictures and they are amazing!
I like it how he ends each Canto. It’s really simple and makes you want to keep reading.

i have to go now, guys, but I’ll see you tomorrow maybe.
Keep reading…I shall have to buy ‘The Dante Club’ now.
Have a good night! :D and thanks for your help!
Okay, talk to you soon, and thank you!! :D
Wow! Great post Hope! How appropriate for this time of year! Although I have heard of the Dante’s “The Divine Comedy” through reference, I am ashamed to say I haven’t read it entirely. I have even traveled in Florence, Italy, but was mostly focused on Italian Renaissance painters, sculptors and the astronomer, Galileo, as historical figure interests of that area. Better get started on some Dante! I have another Italy adventure coming up some time soon and since Florence is on my map would be good to get some reading in. :)
***Hugs Xeno!!!***
Wow. That’s exactly what I was hoping someone would say (but I didn’t know I was wishing for it until you said it, strange, huh?) :D I thought of doing this like a month or so after I came here but it just didn’t work out at that time. And yeah, after this book we can do another!! :D Have you read this before, Xeno?
Thank you Ames!! I’m glad you like the idea of reading it :) I didn’t even think of the time of year, lol, but yeah, it does fit! Ah, I’ve never read all of it either, just bits and pieces in high school, which was a looonggg time ago :D That is so awesome about your travels, I’m going to send you a shout asking you more about them! We could probably make a whole post discussing that, lol :D
I won’t be back online until later tonight, and I’ll try to have more read before I come here. I have a couple things in mind that I was thinking of doing here, and I’ll share those then :)
Actually, it’s been about six years… and I may need a refresher course…
lol, that’s cool, I think it’s been about 5 or 6 years since I’ve read any as well. And that’s what this post is for :)
I’ll research Dante’s work and opinionate.
I think the concept of the nine circles of Hell is interesting. I heard about the nine circles long before I even knew Dante existed; it’s such a commonly-accepted idea that references to it are made in media worldwide. It’s unbelievable that such an abstract idea could have such a profound impact on the world. But then - look at Star Wars.
The ninth circle of hell is a powerful image. Lucifer, a prisoner of his own device…it’s poetic justice on a grand scale.
I’m ashamed that I missed this. I read the poems in high school… in Italian, and it created quite a topical mindset for me.
Unfortunately I haven’t read it yet. I have read quite a bit about it, and seen some documentaries about it though. Someone ought to actually perform the play or make a movie out of it.
Thanks for introducing this book. I’m going to have to go buy it now, which is good, cause I have been contemplating what to read, but have been at a loss.
:)
I think the divine comedy by dante is very interesting and I am able to participate in some study about it.
Darn, I’m six months late. Nevertheless, this is a fantastic idea. I hope there will be more!

I don’t know what I would do with myself if I didn’t have anything to read after finishing up what I’d just been reading. I guess that’s why I immerse myself in multiple books at once (I’m currently reading six all at once, some more than devotedly than others).
I would find it hard to discuss as I do not believe in Hell. I only believe in God. The notion of Hell would diminish HIS infinite domain.
hey guys,
I just started reading the Divine Comedy, and I admit it is a bit hard for me to grasp. However I am taking my time and enjoying it very much. Any advice you can give me to help me understand the book better? Like maybe an other book to help quide me through the book better. Your feed back is much appreciated. Thanks all!
