Advice on starting art exhibitions

I wanted to start non profit art exhibitions to support struggling artists so that they can have their art work displayed. I wanted to do all age ranges but mostly kids! My kid is really into art and I have no idea on how to go about this. I was thinking….. apply for a grant, or something to that extent. Suggestions on how to go about that? Thanks in advance

You need money. You need a place to hold it. I would get in touch with city officials if possible and try to sell them your idea. They can access funds; they have the influence to get a location.

That is a great idea, by the way.

You should contact local community buildings, art centers, etc. See if you can have art displayed there. Locally in College Park, Maryland there was a coffee house that did art shows, that hung for a month. I know because I use to schedule for them until it got way out of hand, which can happen.

You can also contact your local community planning commission—they usually accept grant applications at the end of the year for the new year, however like a business you have to show them your plan. Where, when, why sort of thing, with estimates of how the money will be spent etc. You could also get involved at your childs school and have them put on an art show. Possibly, or start an after school enrichment group.

I know here they have local businesses that offer up their window space for artists. I would check into something like that so you can begin by having the work shown and establishing some momentum when you get into looking for grants. I would strongly recommend taking a grant writing course because it is very detailed and often submitted incorrectly. Good Luck!
