To be honest… the life of a laptop is really only about 2-3 years before you should be updating again… With the way technology moves these days, it could be aneven SHORTER time.

I’d go with the cheaper one. Especially witha laptop… they always have issues after a year or two.

Gee thanks for the advice bionic!!! I see you haven’t posted the same advice for the people who wanted html advice, or what to do because they pressed the wrong button on their computer, or where the Bruce Willis quote was from, or the answer to a riddle ….

This site isn’t just for people going through a crisis. It’s for people to ask for help about anything they need help with, or even just to post a rant.

As for the laptop question, I, personally, would buy a good one rather than a cheap one. Although there are good ones that are cheap, depending on how fast you want it, how much memory and hard drive space you want, etc. Also, some companies sell refurbished ones that have a warranty. I have a refurbished Dell laptop that is a few years old and still works great. It lacks some things that the newer ones have (like built-in wi-fi) but you can get add on cards for them.

Thanks guys. I’ve tried looking at speciality sites but everyone goes into a million technical things I get confused about. I thought I’d just ask people who may have had to choose. It’s for my mum who’s retired so actually getting an expensive one is out of the question. I guess then, to revise it a bit, my question is what’s the cheapest I can get away with, without it being so crap it’s going to break down.

Thanks so much therapsis. My mum only needs it for basic stuff, mostly the internet. The main reason I want to get it for her is that I live in California and she lives in London. I only get to see my family two or three times a year and miss them desperately. I just want them to have a computer with a webcam so I can see them as well as talk.

I think a laptop that does everything you want it to do, will be good, whether it’s cheap or not. Something with capabilites that you use….your decision…

I don’t think she intends on carrying it at all!!! Just wants something that can be tucked away. Also, it’s going to be very advantageous for me to buy it in the US as the exchange rate is so good and it will be hard to carry a desktop in a suitcase! I’ve got a MacBook and I love it.

I think 85% of the world has ‘work issues’!!! Thanks for the computer advice. We do have a Best Buy here so I’ll have a look, although it may still be outside my mum’s price range.

I don’t know much about computers. But my experience so far has been to go to Best Buy because they help you make a decision based on your need and have great warranties in case something goes wrong.

I would say go for a cheaper one, because, from what you’ve said, it probably won’t end up overloaded with video games, or abused by people who are self-proclaimed computer specialists, as my laptop is… but, I have a Latitude 640 that I got from overstock.com, and it’s surviving its 2nd year.. and that’s after I’ve been taking it apart to see why it works the way it works :) I love my baby- it’s so fascinating… so fragile, yet so strong :)

Get the best you can get with your budget. Getting a cheap, ****** laptop will mean repairs within a few months, loss of data and general inconvenience. In the long run, it may cost you more, and not just in money. Laptops are generally quite fragile; you want to get the best you can, so that you’re sure it won’t fall apart a few weeks after taking it out of the packaging. You also want something reliable, that won’t crash, or end up with a damaged harddrive.

Either way, get something with (at least) a CD Writer (DVD writer is better). You’ll want to frequently back up your data - just in case.

P.S. Thanks for your help with my problem. It’s very much appreciated, and made me feel a lot better.

Aww, glad I could help, and thanks for your advice too. I’ve always got great laptops through work and really know how good a not-so-fragile one can be with me being such a clumsy person!

okay…I too am looking for the same thing. I have looked everywhere. Geeks.com seems to be a pretty reputable site with good stuff and a warranty on refurbished laptops and also overstock.com has refurbished and warrantied laptops and desktops. You can also find them directly at some of the manufacturing sites(i.e. Dell.com) which leaves me with my problem…too many choices. I want someone to tell me what I want when it comes to computers and then fix it for me when it doesn’t work. Not very independent, but I do know where to shop on-line; that’s a skill, right? I know you need dual-core, but I have no idea why or what it is. But if you are looking for a pair of shoes…that i can do
