Who now owns the rights and has brought back the function

that allows web surfers to enter a word (without the .com, .net., etc.) in a browser’s URL/Web Address field and a site address is found. I noticed that after years away the first company couldn’t make the business work and now the feature works again.

it works in firefox like this:

- enter a text into the URL bar
- hit enter
If the entered text is NOT a valid, or partically valid url (say, hotmail.com) what it does is this:

- Submit text to google
- Get url to first result
- use that URL

It usually works out pretty well.
