I am currently doing a Music Production course in Newcastle

which is a foundation degree but i would like to enter into the world of music for media….tv, film, short films etc…but have no idea about what top up course to take and where to apply for next year. Sometimes i feel i went on the wrong course although i have learnt alot about how best to capture different instruments in recording and have aquired lots of software to help me produce my own work at home. Any ideas about what to do next?

isn’t there a careers center thing where you are doing your degree, they’ll be able to tell you the options. sounds like what youre doing is not a waste of time, it’s perhaps not the quickest route, but as long as you enjoy it it’s right.
it’s good that you know what you want to do thats always the hardest thing to work out, it’s quite hard to get into so I’d look at doing the qualifications to a degree and even beyond.
experience is always good as well, especially in the area
is there a tv company in newcastle, must be a regional one or near by, do some volounter work, it will help you get on to things and give you an idea of what it’s like and plan where to go. Probably won’t be exactly what you want but it’s all experience and so will help.

Yeh i was thinking about doing another year, a top up. But choosing the right course is hard, and there isnt a careers centre that i know of….must have another look. I do enjoy it most days.. but sometimes its hard and being so far away from people i love makes it difficult for inspiration to come….thats why i want to apply somewhere closer to home. Thanks for the advice!

yeah looking at somewhere close to home is probably what you need if you feel that way.
don’t know how old you are but there is probably a connections somewhere in newcastle, which i think you can use until you are twenty, though it might be 18.
I’d be amazingly suprised if you didnt have a careers thing at your college/uni place though.
check out prospects.ac.uk as well they are quite good for careers stuff and i think you can email and ask questions as well.

talk to one of your tutors, they must know something if its what they teach, and can point you in the right direction.
good luck with it, hope it all works out

Thanks. My tutor told me about the guy who teaches Media and said i should speak to him. Im quite shy though which doesnt help. I find talking about what i want to do embarrassing because some people think its stupid and i should go for something that will give me more success and would be more useful.

i think it’s a pretty cool job, i used to want to do something similar, don’t be shy, he’s there to help his pupils he’ll probably be more than happy to help.
the thing is is that you have a plan and a dream you should go for it, whats the alternative, get a job in an office with a steady pay and chances of promotion and everything, but its boring..
your obviously quite creative, so go for it, don’t worry about what people think.
i want to be a writer and try to write and get published, i have the same problem, but at the end of the day it’s you that has to live with your job and do it, and for about 40 years, so do something you want to do and don’t be embarrassed about being who you are and liking what you like.
