If I hire non-USA based web programmers, how do I protect my idea from being copied by them?

I’m not technical and can’t program. The idea is complex and requires 3rd party software and technology. I want to hire internationally because of the lower cost of web development. But I doubt there is any recourse if I use a non-USA based programmer and they steal my idea, isn’t that right? If so, are there other ways to protect my idea?

I would think you could apply for an international patent: http://www.wipo.int/classifications/i…
http://www.uspto.gov/main/profiles/in…
http://www2.lib.uchicago.edu/~llou/in…

This would provide you firm footing in order to seek legal action if they were to use your intellectual property. Also, somehow connecting a notification that you have registered the idea would serve as a deterrent.

However, I am not sure you could completely prevent piracy in third world situations.

The only other idea– although I would still seek an international patent for you idea–is to develop another idea that would require similar software with a few changes, have most of the software done in that situation, then have a U.S.A. company do the final tweaking to fit your original idea. But I do not know how possible that would be….and you might run into a situation that developing the idea makes them think of the product themselves. Hence the need to have a patent before you do anything.
