A metaphor is a phrase that describes something but not literally. Such as Dan’s example.

A simile is similar, although easier to spot as it’ll often have the word “like” or “as” in the phrase. Such as: The sea is blue LIKE the sky. (Ok, bad example but english lang was never my strong point!)
