How do you communicate with a hairdresser?

I ask this because apparently we speak a different language to them. Why else would I ask for just the very ends to be taken off my hair and lose 3 inches of growth. Or ask for subtle highlights and come out with the top of my dark brown head nearly platinum blonde. I ask this because I am going to be a model at a hairdressing college on Monday………. this could turn out very bad for me!

Be very specific and clear about what you want. Leave not room for subjective interpretation. Express your concerns upfront. All hairdressors need to learn to HEAR their clients. So … give ‘em a lesson in listening … you’ll be doing all those who come after you a favor!

My hairdresser and I communicate very well. I have very THICK and CURLY hair. It is a challenge, to cut, color and maintain with some zemblence of ’soft, controlled, managable hair’. I told her my objective is to GROW it LONG, long like to my waist, and as for the color … it tends to make it dry and frizzy … so what can we do? etc. etc. etc. FINALY, I have long manageable beautiful colored hair … and I am GRAY in spots.

OMG … did I just say that? Hey, I was kidding … no gray here! lol

I communicate very well with mine. It’s pretty easy. I just ask them what they’re doing the first time through, and then the next time, I look it up online pretty well. It’s good to know what blending is, what hair types are, and I agree it’s tough and daunting the first time through, but knowledge and using the internet are powerful tools.

Please take off 1 inch, the hair dresser cuts you hair an inch.
Please take the ends off, they’ll cut back to where the hair appears healthiest taking the split ends off, even if that means 3-5 inches.

Depending on the health of your hair, there’s 101 things they could do, generally unless I’ve been seeing the stylist for a while, I leave no room for negotiation…granted I lived in an area where mullets were popular for a while *shutters*

I also like to observe my stylist, I’ll watch them do someones hair first and then pick them out based on work I’ve seen them do. Or I’ll bring in a photo of what I want, and ask point blank, who would be best at this.

Color is complicated. Depending on the stylist and the buzz style you could be taking a gamble with your hair, it’s health and how you’re going to look when you walk out. I’ve always wanted to go wild, I tend to lean towards reds, and I mean RED. Then I stopped coloring my hair…now it’s a billion colors, and I want to go back to dark, and natural.

Most people when they think of blonde, they think BLONDE—or plat.
If you want subtle highlights, say, hey I want natural high lights to compliment my low lights—if they don’t know what you’re saying…calmly walk out. ;)

I always bring a photo, and i change my haircut pretty regularly. yes i’m a dude but i’m also a freak about my haircuts. bottom line is, find what you want that someone else already has and work from that.

My stylist and I always choose the colors from swatches before she actually starts the weaving. I have her weave three colors into my hair and then use one as a base. The base is always very near the color of my natural hair. This way I have a basic idea of what to expect, though it is always a suprise how it turns out. Sometimes I am more pleased with the results than others … that is to be expected.

I ALWAYS go to the same person and I tip her well. This kinda ensures she puts the effort in the next time around.

I SUGGEST TAKING A RULER WITH YOU… my hair use to be below my rear end… after leaving the ex husband and losing 40 lbs… i cut it to above my shoulders… for the last 3 years, i have been having it cut and syled.. until….. i went the last time… i told her i wanted it cut the same way as it was… and i walked out of there with a lot more off than what i wanted and my bangs… HAHAHAHAHAAHAH…. they were gone!!!! not just pushed back either… cut off.. to the middle of my forehead…. i was ticked!!! so i am letting it grow again… heck with that… lmfao… but take a ruler with you and show them the exact measurement you are willing to deal with being taken off… also.. understand that when hair is wet.. it shrinks when it dries… good luck..

I didnt leave the house socially for months after my second last haircut, by the sounds of it I got the same bangs you did. My last haircut I sat down and put my hand on my forehead, so she wouldnt cut there at all.
