I need help on my essay topic for philosophy.

My professor wants us to write an essay on CRITIQUING PRESIDENT BUSH’S POLICY ON STEM CELL RESEARCH. She told me to think about why is it respectful to let something die rather then using something for its benefit. The something is embryos. THANK YOU

That depends on respecting life. You will have to focus on the view that embryos are living creatures.

With philosophical arguments, you always want to start with values that everyone would agree on– so start with the value of life, and of a healthy life, and of quality life– ideals that you think people on both sides of the right to life/ prochoice argument would agree upon. Also define respect for your audience.

Then proceed to show how Bush’s choice in some ways contradicts these values while scientists reusing forzen embroyos fulfills the values. Then discuss respect in the situation.

Now, if your problem is that you do not agree with it and are having an ethical problem writing the paper in the first place, then…

I would approach the teacher and (very respectfully) say that although you realize that is how some people believe this, you do not, and that you would prefer to write about another issue: perhaps how Bush is incorrect when he says that waterboarding is not torture.

This would be a topic that I think both of you could live with.

Then you could look at the Geneva convention and other Human Rights organizations and define torture, then describe waterboarding and say why it is wrong.

You could also research ethics as a subsection of philosophy, you may find some pointers there.
