What is the purpose of a rubber duck?

I am so perplexed that I stay up at night contemplating this. This is more important than the meaning of life.

My son does 2 things with his, he offers it to me to eat while i give him a bath, and he squishes it under-water then squeezes it so ater comes spraying out at me.

well they are like friends you can talk to in the bath i mean its not like you would invite your friend around to sit in your bath with you (well i dont atleast im sure there are people out there who do)
