PROBLEM: family Christmas letter.

My dad is writing it and it sounds like the worst gossip you could possibly come up about my life right now. How can I get him to erase it all?
It’s really pissing me off. My siblings got off easy. Matt still likes computers, Katie broke her wrist. Tasha is dating someone [can you believe it?] (and guess what? HE’S BRITISH!)and she’s actually trying to lose weight! Wow. Next time you see her, she’ll be a lot different. Thanks dad. But you didn’t tell them I got published on a newspaper website? You didn’t talk about the coffeehouses I read at? Wow. Thanks.
I don’t want them to know anything about me. Not anything personal. I barely know these people anymore. What gives them the right to know so much about me?

You need to tell him right now that if he wants to send out a family letter, it is important to you that he runs the content past the rest of the family, including yourself, so that you feel like it is just a friendly letter and not a biographical tell-all. Tell him that there are accomplishments that you’re eager to share with friends and family, but there are other things that you really only care to share with your very closest circle.

yes. i would think if you tell him that what he’s said makes you uncomfortable he’d respect that and change it.

maybe he just meant it as a ‘can you believe she’s old enough to date? just a short time ago she was watching cartoons and slurping milk…type of thing.
and as far as the weight thing goes, he obviously believes in you since he’s telling the family that you’re going to look a lot different, it sounds like he has much confidence in you

try to talk to him, and tell him how you feel. maybe you can rewrite it together. :O)

Much ado about nothing! It is a family Christmas News Letter. Just be thankful somebody like my mother. Every time she was asked how she was feeling, instead of saying, “fine thank you”. She would give the full litany of her medical history from 1948 and a few births too. Had to start telling her to say, “fine thank you” or “not so well.”

Try getting together with him and telling him which parts you like, then constructively (don’t just say “I hate this”) tell him which parts you don’t like so much, and ask if together, you can rephrae or re-write them.
Two is always better than one.

I agree, confronting the situation up front and calmly is the best approach. If he knows how it makes you feel, he will probably change it. Parents always want to share what they are proud of– but they do not always realize that what they think is cool may be uncomfortable.
