MySQL Optimization - Large Memory Systems?

I’ve got this crazy great server machine and I’m currently trying to figure out the best way to set it up for optimal MySQL usage.

The kicker to this question is that the server has 16GB of memory, so the question I have is, is it a good idea to setup a LARGE ram disk and let the MySQL datafiles live in that, or is it just better to let mysql live on the Harddrives and use tons of cache memory.

Yeah I would stay away from RAM disks, modern OSes (especially Linux) already do what you describe dynamically. If you have the space, innodb with a huge buffer pool really flies, especially if you have all your indicies set up properly.

That’s actually what we ended up doing. Something like a 1gb buffer pool and 500 mb query cache. Might increase these later.

Only problem with this route is that right after a restart, the system is gashtly slow while the cache gets regenerated.
