Check with local churches and social service agencies. Many of them have holiday gift programs for need families. The Department of Social Services matches needy families with people who want to help out. In my office, we “adopt” a needy family through DSS. They tell us the names, ages, and sizes of the family members, and we all purchase gifts for them. In Boston, the Boston Globe newspaper collects money to buy toys for needy children; maybe other metropolitan newspapers do the same. Also, the Marines’ Toys for Tots program may be able to help you–contact the U.S. Marine Corps.

Good luck!

Go and get yourself a temp job at your local Command Labor. You can set it up to get paid daily or weekly. As for the presents, Check with your local Community Action or apply for a Christmas basket with local churches. We have a program here called Horn of Plenty and they supply the kids with toys and a food basket for the holidays. You need to talk to your kids and explain that right now, money is tight and you will not be able to afford allot of presents for Christmas so they will only be getting a couple of small presents. When you can afford it they will be able to get one present that they really want. Remember that it doesn’t matter how many presents they get to open. Whats important is that your there and care and love them no matter what and isn’t that what really matters. Hope this helps :-)

Get a job. Monster, Yahoo Hotjobs, Careerbuilder are some of the largest job boards, where you can apply for jobs and upload your resume. Since Craigslist, allows free job postings, many smaller companies post their vacancies on this online classifieds website. You can also search for jobs from multiple websites using aggregators like SimplyHired and Indeed. Referrals also are becoming a increasingly popular way to get hired. More details and website links available at

You can also try your luck at online charities like Modest Needs, people may send donations. More information at http://www.laodn.org/

I am not sure how much if this will help at this late date, but here are some ideas: http://help.com/post/111105-you-want-…

I hope that one or two of the ideas may help to make your holiday a little brighter.
