I Gotta Flatten My Stomach Before Christmas!

Any tips? I’m 22, 6′1″, and about 175 lbs. I’ve adjusted my diet recently to cut out a lot of carbs and a lot of sugars, the likes of which found in junk food.

However, I do not exercise, so I need to find ones that I can do, preferably ones I can do at home without having to go out into the biting cold. Are crunches and sit-ups sufficient exercises? I used to run on my treadmill every other day for about 20 min. or 1 mile, whichever came first, but I never seemed to lose any weight. I’d only be sore and out of breath, but never any thinner.

So what can I do to lose this weight before Christmas? I am trying to set this before Christmas goal for a reason. I always used to be the skinny kid in the family, but now I’m kind of lumpy and out of shape. I wouldn’t say I’m fat, but I do have deposits of fat around my waist, buttocks, thighs, a little around my chin (which I effectively hide with a beard), and on my arms surrounding my deltoids and triceps. I’d really like to not only look good again but be healthy. If anything I am trying to gain weight in muscle!

Anyone out there who can help me?

Crunches are great, but make sure to do several different variants to work out all of your abdominal muscles. Also do leg-lifts or bicycle-crunches to work your lower abs, which are the most important for keeping the pooch away. Check your posture as well to make sure some of that lumpiness isn’t from slouching or arching your back so your belly sticks out. Be conscious about keeping your abs tight throughout the day. Twenty minutes of crunches won’t make up for a whole day of sloppy-belly.

Also, you burn as many calories walking as you do running if you go the same distance, so try walking to places near your house for exercise. Need to grab some milk? Hike on down to the Village Pantry and pick some up. Got 20 minutes to spare? Take a walk around the neighborhood. Take the stairs, park in the farthest reaches of the parking lot, I’m sure you’ve heard all the tips. You should aim for at least 30 minutes of brisk activity per day, but it’s equally beneficial in small chunks and in one long workout.

Also, it’s great to cut out sugars, but make sure you’re still eating healthy carbs, like whole-grain pasta and bread! They’re important for energy!!

Walking and doing housework is the best exercise for losing fat and ensure that your diet does not include any high calorie foods. Formulate your own weight loss plan and you will lose weight faster. From http://myweight.info

Thanks for the tips. Sounds pretty good. I’ll be doing a lot more walking from now on, since time is sparse with exams to take and papers to write and people to see, but parking farther away from my classes won’t kill me (although it might make me late).

As far as carbs go, yeah, I’ll definitely be keeping them on my diet for energy. And I also heard on TV (from a personal trainer on one of those weightloss shows) that chocolate milk is a great energy drink, and gives plenty of vitamins and whatnot.
