Tips for studying for finals?
I’m worried I’ll forget all the math, all the science, everything when I get to school. I’ll get sleep and eat well, and when I get there, I’ll relax and forget it! What do I do? I’ve studied my butt off, and I’m not a natural in math, so it’s going to be hard to memorize these formulas and all the history chapters and stuff. I’m freaking out at the last moment, my worries got the better of me. Please help me. D: Finals are tomorrow and Friday. I’m counting on you guys. u.u

Just go over what you know in your head constantly. When you fall asleep, be thinking of what you just studied and what you studied the day before. Walking home, in the shower, eating dinner. Live, eat, breathe your subjects. That’s what I do when I really, really want to get good grades. lol… Kinda extreme though. :P
I’ve tried doing that, I did that last night, too. I guess I get so worked up worrying about if I’m going to fail that I do poorly. How do I stop this? D;
I mean, I get wonderful grades and all, but every single person that knows me knows I have horrible, HORRIBLE testing anxiety.

If you have studied your work and have done your assingments, understand what you have learned, you will be OK. When you see the test as you open it, you will start to remember it. Relax and let it come to you. Ask questions BEFORE the test starts on things you know will be in it, but are not clear in.
If you did not do what you were supposed to do thorough the Semester and did not study well, you may be in for a tough test!
If you fail because of this, you will need to learn from it and do the right things and study the next time around and be very serious about it!
Dedicate your time properly!
I failed Mythology because I did not take it seriously the first time around, but the second time around, I dedicated myself and got an “A”! Good luck to you!
I used to have horrible test anxiety too. Then, I decided to take a more nihilistic point of view when it comes to tests specifically. Tests are dumb. I mean, I do as well as you can on them, but I just don’t care too much about them any more. I still study and stuff, but when I’m actually taking the test, I don’t value it much. I figure that if I know the material, it should come to me and stressing while taking the test isn’t gonna help much at all.
Dart- good idea. ;o My dad told me the same. I know i understand it, it’s just math kills me. DD: It really does. I’m afraid I’m not doing as well as I could, because I get straight As and Math is the only thing I’m not doing too well in. Blahh. I’m trying my hardest, and if I don’t do well, I’m afraid my parents will think I’m a failure. I want to be an orthodontist, and math counts a whole ton for that job.
Peekay- That’s a good way of putting it. What grade are you in?
Gotcha. I’m a freshman. So you pretty much have had finals? Are they as big a deal as the teachers make them?
math can be tough if you do not understand it. At least you know where your weakness is. I suggest you find a Tudor that will work with you on your level and work with you to understand where your weakness are and work on them.
practice makes perfect. Put your main focus on what you will think will be on the test and go over it with your parents or someone you are comfortable with who understands it. If you go over your math with someone now, you may have a better chance to pass.
Study your weakest points first! I wish you good luck!
I don’t have finals until January here in California.
To answer your second question–it depends. It depends on how much of your grade is deciphered by the final. If it’s worth only like 10%, then it’s not such a big deal. 20 - 30% is a big deal. And when it gets to be like 50 or 60% of your final grade–it is a HUMONGOUS deal. But as a freshman, I don’t think you have to worry about those big percentages yet.
In college, according to several of my teachers, some professors make the final worth 90 or 100% of your grade. My math teacher two years ago told me that when he was in college, he went to one of his math classes a total of 2 times: the very first day, and the day of the final. He didn’t do any assigned homework, but passed because he passed his final.
Relax, dude!
Besides, colleges look at your sophomore and junior years the most, I’m told (although that definitely doesn’t mean you can slack off freshman or senior years).
Dart- I’ve had a math tutor for months and months now. I saw her every day last week because of the finals, and some days this week. It’s just a ton of pressure. My mind will forget it all over worrying about what people will think of me, if I won’t become an orthodontist, if my grade will go down.
Peekay- Is that true, your last sentence? They look more at those years? I never slack off. The finals are 20%. DD: If you’re running a C+ - B- in Honors Algebra, well, that could bring it down to an F, if you get a D or a C, couldn’t it?
PeeKay has a valid point! Just relax and study your weakest points first and see what happens.
Yup. DD: But if you are getting a B minus or a C plus in math, it goes for 20% of your grade. This one goes on my college application. If I do poorly, heck. I’m done for. I might as well live under a rock because I’d be outta there. DD: I can’t do anythign without worrying what the future will be like or what my friends and parents will think. It’s not fun. D;
Proper communication with your parents is essential. You have to get serious about your math and do everything you can to understand it if you want to do well!
Do not hide this from your parents and maybe they will understand! You are only human!
I’ve talked to them a couple times. My dad says that “it’s a long road, Anna. Do your best and keep going, no matter what. Things will stop you but you have to keep at it.” and my mom says, “Listen, this will kill your grades and it will be very hard to get into a dental school. Do everything you can to ace it.”
DD:!!! I’m nervous.
Hmm. What I suggest is (sorry if this is a bit blatant):
1) Put on some nice, relaxing music (like classical).
2) Close your internet browser and instant messenger.
3) Open your book and study.
Although, if you’re taking a break from studying now, I can understand. You should definitely take breaks from time to time. :)
Your dad seems like the right person to confide in. he seems to take a more relaxed approach with you. Your mom seems to take the tougher route. You are right! This is pressure! Talk to your dad and let him know how you feel about this and why you are worried and maybe he will talk to you on a more positive way! Try this! it might work for you!
To finish, take PeeKay’s advise and take a break when your head feels like it is going to explode! Music is very relaxing to the soul!
Blahh. Okay. Thank you so much guys. If you have any more tips, or anyone that you think can help, send them over. THanks so much. I love you guys. -hugs- ^^ Wish me luck. 11 chapters of history. Blahhhh. u.u Thank you again. I have to go study some more!
In any spare time, STUDY. Take deep breaths. Lol, no really it helps, especially right before the test. Go over it in your mind rightbefore the test, too. Take studying breaks when you study for a long time and do something I’ve found really helpful even though it sounds CRAZY: get up really early and study until it’s time to get ready to go to school. It really helps me, even though I’m so not a morning person. If you have a really smart friend or two, study with them to make everthing clear. Igh I hate history, I sorry. Good luck!
