There are gasses dissolved in the fluid. When you stretch the joint the volume increases and therefore the pressure in that volume decreases. This allows to gas to come out of the liquid. It makes a noise like opening a bottle of soft drink. This is also the same principle that gives divers the bends if they come up too quick.

Different body structures respond differently to certian Ranges Of Motion. Some exercise may be better for you than others. When the clicking takes place, is there any physical discomfort? If there is, you shoud stop that exercise and see if there is another one available that can still work that bodypart, albiet from a different angle. Sometimes there may be no physical pain during the clicking but that does not mean there is no damage being done. In the long run, what seems to be nothing can be slowly damaging you. Be careful, do not lift excessive weights if it causing you to lose perfect form, otherwise you are cheating that muscle from it’s exercise and incorporating other muscle to help. Sure you may be lifting more, but if you are not lifting correctly then you are going to eventually hurt yourself. If after attempting a different exercise in an attempt to quell the clicks & pain fails, I would contact my primary care physician or other health professional to be sure nothing has already been damaged.
