What do I do?

My parents were talking about me taking the highschool equivalency test. I’m only 16. I do want to get out of school, but the thought of growing up that fast is daunting. I don’t know what I want to do. I mean, I know I want to go to a culinary school, but I don’t know if I want to go so soon. I could skip a year and a half of school, if I pass. I’m semi-confident that I could pass, but I’m scared of passing. Does that make any sense?

Did you tell your parents that? What did they say? I am sure that they would understand or try to help if they knew.

Yeah. I’ve told my parents, but they told me to think about it more. I sort of want to, but I don’t know if I’m ready to grow up.

Why don’t you just take the high school test and wait for the result? If you pass, you still have the option of saying that you don’t feel ready to move on. If you fail, then you won’t have to worry.

If you have a specific fear about school, then explore that fear. What exactly would it entail? Being away from home? Going to work at a younger age? Having to be with complete strangers? Is the problem short-term or long-term? Is it that you are not sure about what you want to do?

Try and narrow it down and see if you find a solution or not. If yes, great. If not, then really don’t do it.

Lots of love to you

I think my fears are: I’m basically a homebody, so being away from home and on my own so soon is scary. I love working, though–I LOVED my last job of two and a half years at a daycare center. I do have trouble around people–I’m definetly not a people person.

Any job or further education will entail moving away and being around other people. Perhaps knowing that you and your parents can find alternatives or find a way to prepare you for it. Perhaps, try a summer course away from home for a few weeks and see how that goes first?

There are many creative ways of looking at it and finding a solution you would be happy with. In the meantime take it one step at a time. Take the test and see how it goes.

Hi. If you passed this test, would you immediately have to leave school? do you have any leeway here? could you take the test, but then leave some time before going straight to culinary school?

I don’t know…I’ll talk to my parents about it.
