I have Comodo. It’s the best firewall I’ve used so far; free or non-free.

I also use Avast! and AVG.

The slower your connection is, the less chance of getting hacked/viruses because it takes too long for them to get into your system :P Thus I have absolutely no protection but I’ve been doing fine for a very long time. I still follow safe online practices though.

It’s the first time I have heared that a slow connection can stop this from happening. I have a very fast connection though.

Yeah back a few years I had blazing connection and because I - then too - went commando with no software or firewalls, I had to reformat my computer every few days haha. But seriously I am using nothing and I have Ultra-Lite Highspeed which is maybe 2x dial up, and I’ve never had a single virus or hacker or whatnot. I don’t use P2P things though - just Bit Torrents [which I guess is P2P lol]

I have that and agree it’s not as good as it used to be. As yet I haven’t found anything better to replace it.
I still think it important to stop stuff from being sent from a computer without the person knowing that it is happening, hence a good firewall is essential.

My step son and my niece likes to go to MY Space which gave my mom and me a virus on both of our computers. Not sure of my parents computer but we had Norton Virus protection.
I don’t won’t to ban them from using the computer but i will if i have too.

Do u think the Comodo, Avast and AVG would be better to do then the Norton?

Yes 27ladyg.

Norton is not as good as a lot of other programs out there. Windows firewall is next to useless. You can try the new ones out and if you dont like them, revert back to what you are familiar with.

lil_bit_shy.

I will try to explain a little bit more.

CCleaner :- Download it, install it. Let it run on your computer.
What it does :- Cleans the cookies from your browser, cleans your computer of other un-needed files. When you delete files with windows it does not actually delete the files, it just marks that space on your hard disc,to be over written, this takes up space on your hard disc and can leave pottentualy harmful programes on your computer. CCleaner actually wipes them from your computer.

Firewall :- Windows firewall, completely useless. A good firewall will scan every file that tries to insert itself on your computer. It will advise you if the file is contaminated with a virus etc. It will advise you what actions you should take, like allow this file, block this file, etc.
It also tells you if a program on your computer is trying to send information from your computer, to somewhere or some-one on the internet. This is often used by spyware, malware, sending your personal information, viruses and others. without your consent and often with out your knowledge.

Anti virus :- Stops and finds known and often unknown virus, on your computer. From being active on your computer.

Anti spyware :- Stops unscrupulous websites from tracking you on the internet, inserting malware, inserting virus, inserting trojans etc.

Using all of them, is needed to keep your computer clean and as safe as possible. They all do different things to help keep your computer safe.

A lot of people say ” It’s never happened to me.” The thing is, you will never know that for sure. They dont advertise the fact that they have been put on your computer.

Your anti virus is for stopping virus.

Adaware is for finding them and then cleaning them from your computer. It doesnt work the same way your anti virus does.

Firewall.
Anti virus.
Anti spyware

All of them have free versions, that can be downloaded. Just type in free firewalls into the address bar. Have alook what is on offer.
Then do the same with the others in turn.

There are allready some links on this page, that you could considder.

Ad-Aware anti spyware.
Avg anti virus.
CCleaner.

They all come free or have free versions, if you are quite happy with the versions on your own computer, then stick with them.

The idea of this post is to make people aware that, these days proting your computer is necessary.

If you jsut have Norton Antivirus, no it’s not a firewall. But if you have Nortno INternet Security, you might also have the firewall on, because it comes with that package.

I guess you could remove Norton, but if you dished out the 90$ or whatever it costs nowdays I’d feel like I wasted a large sum of money. I’d suggest disconnecting internet before uninstalling Norton and then installing the stuff rom the links thep provided, just to ensure that you don’t get any problems between uninstalling/installing.

If you scroll up to ” I use ” there is a small list. Saves me having to repeat myself.

Hi thep, this is useful. Just need reassurance. Is Mcafee good - will it do the job of keeping my computer clean?

McAfee is fine. Comodo is better.

I find mcAfee agressive, it wants to take over your computer. Comodo is much kinder and helpfull.

Try clearing all of the old junk you dont need from your computer.

Run you anti-virus and anti-spyware then, if you wish to renew anything.

Uninstall the old stuff and install anything you have downloaded, following any instructions that come with the downloads.

I thought you might like some help.

I have been checking out internet abuse sites most of the day. It seems that the main causes of some of the horrific things that do happen is. Abusers can put programs on your computer and get your computer to send messages back to them. This is the simplest way I can explain it.

I have also searched for the best FREE SOFTWARE to stop this from happening to you.

I came up with this :- http://www.comodo.com/products/free_p...

I will keep coming back and telling you about keeping safe on the internet.

I would appreciate you telling me if you think this a worthwhile pursuit.

STAY SAFE ON THE INTERNET.
