computer help: Tonight I setup an old windows computer I have used in about a year. - Help.com

Tonight I setup an old windows computer I have used in about a year.

When I turn it on I get a message that starts out “if you can read this message, windows has” something about my monitor. This is the same monitor I have always used with this computer but I am stuck on this black screen and I can not get it to go away. I have tried booting in safe mode and got nothing. Nothing has happened to the computer or anything in the last year and it worked before. Help please.

Well if the computer is giving you a windows error than it has obviously already booted into windows. See if you cant tone down your resolution. Also check the VGA cable.

Yes, dondante is correct…
go into “Safe Mode” and change your resolution to 600×800 and reboot…

This is a black screen and I can not get anything to work.

Have you changed the display card or has someone swapped out your display
card?

A black DOS prompt? If so than it doesn’t sound like Windows. If you hooked it up to your network when you set it up Windows could have pulled video driver updates for you and ****ed it up.

Play with your monitor a bit…adjust the settings on the monitor itself.
You should have a reset button on your monitor…press that button while
your computer is on and should have windows displayed.

CMOS is a battery on your motherboard that keeps track of time. I wouldn’t think it is your issue.

Ooh! that’s tough! I’m about to turn in for the night. What Windows are you working with? Also, before going there…do you have another monitor that you can connect
to your desktop? You can use your laptop monitor to see if the problem is in your
desktop or monitor. Also, you didn’t really say, “No I haven’t changed my video
card or know if someone has or not.”

Well if you open the case you will see the battery somewhere on the motherboard. I should be a small circular lithium-ion battery. There should be an LED off it, if it is on than it has power. Your machine could look differently this has just been my experience. To me your issue sounds like video driver or setting issue. What it is specifically I couldn’t say. You could try to find some kind of a bootable CD if safe mode won’t work.

I think safe mode works because he was able to change the resolution. I am thinking
that the computer must be Win98 or 95. I forgot how to get to the Bio’s. I think
it’s F1 during boot up? I agree with you dondante it sounds like a setting issue
to me also….

when I hold f8 for safe mode all I get is a long beep sound and it does nothing. I have seen the battery, as for a reboot cd I don’t want to loose any of my info or programs. is there a way around that with the reboot cd?

L.O.L!!! OH NO!!! THE M.E. HAS STRUCK AGAIN!!!

How were you able to change the resolution before….had your computer work earlier
and you’ve changed the resolution and now it’s blank space or black screen now?
(very important)

Windows ME…that is your problem right there. I am not going to lie to you, that operating system was the worst one ever put out by Microsoft, I would rather run 3.1 than ME. I would say you will be lucky to fix it on an old computer with ME, it is time to kill it or run your games from DOS.

I never changed my resolution before. It did work a year ago and nothing seriously has been changed since. The only reason I need this computer up is to get info off of it. Then it can get tossed out.

Ok………sounds like your cmos battery died!I would take it to a computer
repair shop and ask them to give you a courtesy check of the cmos battery.

Keep an eye on your computer…..do you have a Fry’s Electronic Store near
you?

No it is a hard drive. It isn’t SATA most likely so almost any machine should be able to read it if you can hook it in right.

what would I gain by putting a hard drive that will not boot into another computer, wouldn’t it give the same problem. not to mention I would not have any drivers for any components of the other computer on this hard drive.

….I still recommend checking that battery first. Even if you
take it out and measure it with a power meter

It means that windows stoped running because there is a problem in the system and you need to reinstall which ever version your using. If it is an older model F4 or F5 is safe mode. Hope this helps. :-)

the reason I ask is thats what keeps coming up now. I opened the computer up to change the bat. and what an idiot I am. I had forgotten I put a new video card in a few years ago and I plugged the monitor into the old port. Wow what a moron. But now I am starting to remember why I quit using it.

somethings been changed and has interfered with the normal
start up of the system. This is why I had asked if anyone
fooled around with your computer. Something has changed, a newly
installed software that causes conflict or driver or card.

Something has changed. Your CMOS battery is fine. You’ve wouldn’t have
gotten that far if it wasn’t so discard the battery thing….

moron? naaaaa….me likes yawning alot…..good night!

Ha ha. I see that you fund the problem before I could comment. I have seen this happen before don’t feel bad. It is a common problem with gamers that add a graphics accelerator and forget about the internal video processor. They go to move their computer and bang no video…

Have fun Ron
