Is memory foam all they hype it up to be?

ive been considering buying a memory foam mattress recently, because the spring mattresses hurt my back (even though im young, i cant still feel the ill effects of the mattress, although it may just be this one.). Is it worth the cost? i layed down in a showroom version the other day, and to my dismay, it was stiff, unyeiding, hard, and generally uncomfortable. Ive also been reading up on it, and found that until their aired out, they have a strong possibility of stinking like paint for several weeks, which may cause certain asthmatic complications (i have asthma), and furthermore, several people have reported that the smell never completely goes away. Finally, i found that due to the high ammounts of the fire retardant PBDE, there could possibly be some long-term detramental effects on your health. I just wanted to know if i should be looking at something like these, or if i should look deeper into something like a sleep number bed, or more prefferably, a waterbed.

Yes, about the smell but I slept with an open window for a couple of weeks. I am not sure about the fire retardant PBDE. However, my memory mattress was the best thing I ever brought. Its warm, comfortable and supports my body well. I do not wake up with any aches and pains. I have no regrets.

I really love my Tempurpedic. When I bought it, they gave me a 180 trial period, in which I could decide whether it was comfortable for me and whether or not to keep it. See if you can find someone who will give you that same guarantee. Also, there are different memory foams of different hardnesses. There should be more than type of memory foam bed at the store you went to, try all of them in the store and then take home the one that you like the most. I think Temperpedic offers 3 or 4 different types, including one that also has a pillow top. If after several weeks, you still don’t like it, try something else.
