Questions about electric breaker.

Alright, I finally went back to my apartment, and my charges are a whooping 60 dollars. Somehow I consumed 18 kilowatts per day while NOT here.

Anyway. I tested my breakers.. My fridge is a energy eating machine so i will get a new handy one. But that isn’t the the point. When I turned off all the breakers, except the main… the meter still moves?

I have no idea but isn’t the main hooked up to something?

The main breaker shuts off all the electricity. The meter doesn’t move if I shut the main off, but moves if I shut off all the breakers for everything in the apartment. I was wondering if anyone has more knowledge about this.

If you shutt of the breakers in the apartment, you will still have a small feed, not really noticable. When shutting off the main at the meter, wait 2 min, the dial should stop. If not the meter may be defective. If it has a dial & not digital, it may be outdated. To check what is draining power, your utility company can give you on a temp basis a recording meter. you can also check all your wiring as loose wires cause higher amps, esp if you have alm. wiring. If you are in a apartment, contact the maintenance people & ask them to check it

I think your breaker box is fine. Cutting the main breaker off eliminates power from coming in, therefore your meter stops moving.

Cutting off all other breakers and leaving the main on is still allowing electricity in. Its not as though the electrcity just waits to be use, its a constant flow. When not being used, the flow is at a minimum.

You can contact your electric company and ask them if they can provide you with a month to month usage over the last couple of years. That breakdown will give more info on what uses the most.
