Please help if you can.

My wife, our young son and I have recently migrated from the UK to Adelaide in South Australia after thinking about it for several years. What should be a happy time and a new beginning is turning into a nightmare situation because I’m struggling to find work. We have some money - not a lot but some - so aren’t starving, but our dreams are moving further away with each dollar of our savings we spend. The type of visa we have - SIR 495 it’s called - has conditions which mean we don’t get any financial help from the Australian authorities, not even child support. I’m applying for all kinds of roles (I normally work as a general manager so am flexible) but without Aus experience it’s proving very difficult to get someone to give me a chance, and although I keep a smile on my face, inside it hurts. My wife worries too, I know, but we try not to talk about it much, instead living each day as it comes and trying not to spend much money. I have all the documentation to prove I’m genuine (as we originally applied for our visa online. everything is in electronic format already) and am willing to answer any questions.

I’m swallowing hard writing this as I’ve never asked anyone for help like this before, but needs must. If you can’t help, never mind, but if you can - even just a few dollars or whatever - you’ll probably never know how grateful I’d be. Hopefully I’ll be in work soon and this will be something behind me, but right now it’s eating me.

Thanks.

there are a few people on here from australia, if i come across someone i’ll direct them to this post.

congratulations on applying for jobs though, please carry on and dont give up!

As someone who endures the struggles of Adelaide too, I think I’ll speak for myself when I say it sucks. LOL.

At the moment, Australia is going through a very extreme drought situation (they pop up every few years and usually last almost a decade, no biggie [/sarcasm])Not only that, but South Australia is literally the driest state in the entire world. (Deserts get more rain than we do) So because of the drought, most of S.A’s farmers are out of work, losing their whole livestocks and crops meaning they have no income as well. It’s a really tough time to be here, especially this summer. (Though the weather hasn’t been that bad the last few days, keep it in the 20’s please mother nature!)

Work has been hard to find for everyone seeing as farmers and crop workers are out of business too. Though the unemployment percentage is at 4.1, which is the lowest Australia has had, it’s still at risk of rising very quickly if there’s not a sufficient change in the climate soon. Our heat waves cause deaths and dehydrated related illnesses as well, not to mention the ammount of blackouts we had last summer.

Keep trying your best, there’s training you can get through TAFE colleges and Adult Learning Centres. Particualarly, Thebarton Senior College, it’s very culture diverse and you can get training and qualifications that employers will accept. Especially if you go through the SACE program.

Sadly, this site isn’t for finanicial assistance like others have stated, it’s a place to get advice. I hope I’ve given you the best I could. Welcome to Australia by the way. And as a fellow Adelaidian who is born out of the country too, hello. LOL.
