I’ve just flunked out of university.

My other alternative is to start small as a writer and collumnist and make my name known to the industry that way. I know I can do it, but my dad’s lost all faith in me. I just need some support.

Making money as a writer is HARD, but, as someone who is a fully-employed writer but trying to go freelance, I can assure you it can be done. Definitely just keep writing away, even a blog as some job specs I’ve seen ask for links to anything you’ve done including this. Have you got anything published yet? What kind of writing do you do? There are a lot of legitimate sites that pay you if people read your stuff, none of which, of course, I can remember at the moment. I don’t know if you can get paid for assignments abroad but if you go to Craigslist.com then you can also pick up some work under their Writers Jobs and Gigs sections, although you do have to trawl through city-by-city. It’s a slog but keep plugging away and you can make a decent enough living as a writer, sometimes more than that.

As for support, I totally failed my A levels when I was 18 and thought “that’s it, my life is over!!!” But I got back on my feet and went on with University. It may be that you choose to go back at some point, but the time is just not right for you. If you have gone to Uni straight on the treadmill from school/college that it can just seem like you are studying for ever and it can be so demoralizing. I know your dad probably sees what you have done as a negative, but at least by quitting and thinking about your future you are doing something active and positive. Good luck.
