Money help: I am self employed, and in this economy, just getting by. - Help.com

I am self employed, and in this economy, just getting by.

I depend heavily on my van to keep up with getting supplies, marketing, delivering my product, etc. I have some cronic health problems, and am unable to work at a regular job, so I created my own. However, on Dec. 28, we had a storm where water got into my dash board, and shorted out the electrical system. The van was fried, and had to be junked. My insurance covered nothing.I had $600 at the time, and with a problem on my credit report, and self employed, it took a few days to find someone to sell me a car, but they were over an hour away. I lined up a friend who promised me a ride to pick up the new van, made an appointment with the dealer, who was doing me a HUGE favor, and waited the next day for the friend to pick me up. Then he called and said he was “To tired” togive me the ride! I frantically tried to find someone else, as I needed the van to do a market the next day, but no one was around, and the dealer sold the van to someone else. He was no longer willing to finance me, as I wasn’t able to follow through the first time. I missed the market, and had to use the money I had to keep the phone on and get heating oil. Now I am in a terrible mess! I cannot make any money without the van, I am out of food, and will not have my rent this month. I have seen sone vans advertised, but don’t have the downpayment anymore.I am afraid I will become homeless in a few months! I live in a seasonal area, with very little public transportation available. I tried some internet loan sites, but they are all scams!Does anyone know ANYTHING I can do?

Thanks for taking the time to reply, but I think you missed some key points in my post. I have had 3 ruptured discs, cannot straighten my left arm or rotate left wrist, have severe carpal tunnel in both wrists, need a knee replacement on left side, effects from an old accident that I was not properly treated for,and have severe migraines when exposed to flouresent light due to optical nerve damage from meningitis. There are other problems I won’t mention that add to this. Not a complaint, just the facts.I also live in a tourist area, that is completly dead this time of year…most places are closed. We don’t HAVE a temp agency!
Years ago I applied to become a foster parent.I live in a two bedroom house, LESS than 600 square feet, with my daughter.I know a few foster parents.I would hardly describe the allowance they recieve as income. And you don’t just call up and have them send over a kid with a check right away.
I am not sure, but it seems to me your “answer” was a bit flip.I work each day to my limit, and then try some more.I have had a series of things go wrong lately, but hung in there by my fingernails, till the van went, which was the worst thing that could happen right now.I don’t know what I’m going to do, And in desperation I post on this sight and get what seems like a snide “Get a job” comment in return. Thanks alot.

With that many health issues, I don’t understand why you aren’t on social security. People with REAL health problems ARE the ones who needs assistance and are the reason for it’s existence.

I am so sorry for the problems you are experiencing. I am in about the same boat you are–wet, isn’t it? My van’s tranny went out a few months after I spent several thousand dollars getting it repaired! As to the suggestion that your daughter work (if she is even old enough) how will she get there?!
If you apply for food stamps they have a program where in dire situations you can get emergency food stamps that day. It sounds like you should qualify for low income medicaid, as well. Also, is your daughter’s mother in the picture? If not, maybe you could get TANF or Social Security on your daughter. I hope some of this helps.

You have to have real health problems to get social security disability. Many people with minor and major health problems are working.

Yes, you do have to have REAL health problems to get SSD. Only your doctor can determine whether you are disabled or not. Some people who are deaf (my nephew) or even blind work, but they are healthy individuals who are able to do certain jobs. If you are unable to even get out of the bed some mornings how are you going to work?!
Are you, Anonymous, a doctor who has examined this person and determined that they are able to work?
