Year help: has anyone here married someone in another country?

has anyone here married someone in another country?

I have been back and forth to the states for close to 5 years now and i am now planning to move there this year. Its going to be quite a radical change in a lot of ways…financially most of all. I was just wondering if anyone here has been in a similar situation and would be willing to share experiences with me or allow me to pick their brains on certain things.

I did - still doing it right now - paperwork is taking ages :S I visited the USA from the UK (meet him on help.com strangely enough - was going to stay with him instead of hotel and save some money -wanted to see how the Americans lived) and fell madly in love - he asked me to marry him and I said yes :D

Urgh, well, I’m not American, but I would never choose the US or England. You’ll be giving up free healthcare, and all those social programs, and just be gaining a bunch of religious crazies o.0

lol it isnt really that bad - if you have health insurance (which most good jobs offer any way) America is really very different. I was expecting a culture shock - but I wasnt expecting a culture shock this huge! even doing the weekly shopping is a struggle coz everything is different! lol

Well i have spent a fair amount of time in the US over the last few years so i am aware of how different a lot of things are. Did you go through a lawyer for the process or did you do it all off your own backs?

We thought about lawyers but decided against it. We did seek advice from 1 lawyer at the beginning - just to check some details we couldnt solve. We have done the rest of it all off our own backs - it is very difficult on your own. I would advise lawyers. Saves you having to stress about it all. Im still going thru the process and it feels like the blind leading the blind.
