I don’t jog very often…
however, when I do, especially for prolonged periods of time, I experience fairly severe lower abdominal pain… I was wondering if anyone has the same experience, and if anyone knows why this happens….

The thing is, though, it’s not surface muscle pain- it’s a deep inside pain, that persists for a long time afterwards. Also, my stomach muscles are fairly strong- I train them….
Dear Chicago girl,
Ok, Don’t listen to Ireland. He/she obviously has no idea what he/she is talking about. The Intestines have blood that is shunted away from them as your large muscle groups need more oxygen to feed on while working. Hence the intestines decrease the amount of work the are actively engaged in.
Now, the concern is that you have said that the pain last long after you have finished working out. for possible differential diagnosis more information is needed. Lactic acid build up? Disease of the muscle? tendon tear?, muscle sprain/strain?
Pain is too broad. what does it feel like? when exactly does the onset of the pain begin. Does anything make it better or worse? Does the pain radiate to any other parts of your body? does it start in one place then move to another. How long does it last? what makes it go away? what have you tried to make it better? do you have any past medical history no matter how trivial it may seem?
Pain can be either acute or chronic, and is normally of Neuropathic or necoceptic in nature. the idea is to not only find out what pain it fits but what causes it. Remember though as you search for answers. Sometimes pain has no origin and can last for years.
I have had chronic abdominal pain with no diagnosis for two and a half years in the upper right quadrant. it maybe that the Doctors have yet to think outside the box that modern medicine has built for them to protect thier careers, or it maybe a pain of unknown epidimology (Unkown Origin) I hope you solve your pain as I hope I may one day solve mine. Best wishes and good luck.
Sorry Ireland, Just know what your talking about before you give unsound advise. You could hurt someone really badly one day.

Thank you for your interest. I understand that a diagnosis over the internet is rarely accurate. However, I will try to answer your questions. My medical knowledge is still very limited in some areas, and I have not found a direct reason for my pain. It does last a long time after I finish jogging- usually three of four hours, though sometimes up to a day. I don’t think I have had any injury to the muscle there, or disease. Though my family does have a history of hernias I have never had one, even in childhood. The pain itself is somewhat like that of an extremely overworked muscle, but deeper- almost like menstrual cramps, but more severe. Any movement that contracts the abdominal area- including abdominal breathing, increases the pain somewhat. I have not found anything that makes it significantly better (but I have not tried painkillers- I have a thing against foreign substances in my body), though not moving for a while seems to speed recovery time somewhat.. It doesn’t radiate, and doesn’t travel. Jogging specifically seems to trigger it, and not just a few seconds- but rather, a 5-8 minute run/jog. The pain starts while I am jogging, and increases fairly quickly, though I usually stop before a definite peak because of the intensity. It gets worse upon stopping, for a few seconds, and then begins to ebb very slowly, until only pain caused by movement remains.
I would have thought this as a result of weak abdominal muscles, or bad posture, but my abdominals are fairly strong due to my training, and my posture while running doesn’t seem out of the ordinary….
Again, thank you for taking an interest in my question :)
Does your pain feel like REALLY REALLY painful gas while running?? and somtimes gets so painful it spreads to your legs and the only way to releive some pain is to curl up in a ball?
Hmmm.. no, actually.. it feels like it lies inside the internal muscle wall, but it doesn’t spread, and doesn’t feel like gas….
I don’t know why it happens but you should probably see a doctor just to be sure. It doesn’t look like anyone on this website really knows what it is and so, for your peace of mind, just ask a doctor. It may not be anything serious but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Good luck and let us know how it went.
Chicago Girl,I had the same experience as yours and i have no idea what causes it. Everytime i jogged for 10 minutes and above, the pain comes. internal muscle wall and it will be less painful once i stopped jogging. I have consulted a doctor but has no outcome.
just have a huge **** before you go jogging and you be fine, it’s just the G-forces as your running. If you empty your bowl it will be lighter making it easier for you to run. I’m guessing your fat….. Therefore you should lose approx 1 stone in weight per ****, this will increase your jogging time. If I’m wrong and your not fat then you have cancer and your surely going to die very soon. Hope I helped x
