Homework Policy?

I used to help on www.physicsforums.com which is a website where people help others with homework. That site has a good policy that ensures people aren’t simply given the answer. If you ask for help there you must show your prior work and thoughts on the problem. If you don’t know where to start you at least have to write down relevant formulas, definitions, etc. that may be useful. If you don’t put down something like that, you get no help. And people providing guidance are not allowed to simply give the answer, they only give hints and explanations that will help the asker to figure it out by himself.

This prevents a “gimme gimme” attitude among people asking question and puts the burden of their coursework squarely on their shoulders where it belongs, but lets them get help in understanding their problem and how to approach it, after they’ve shown some effort of their own.

Should help.com have a policy like this?

Help.com does not have a official position on this subject but have discussed it in posts like this in the past. We wholeheartedly agree with you and try not to give out answers. We feel a link to point them in the right direction or a question is the best we can do.

I sort of agree, though, if a student wants to just stop with the answer, and is not willing to learn how to do the problem, why should we feel sorry for them? Why not let students who want the easy way out take the easy way out?

I believe that Jeff (the site Dev) was going to create a helpbot response to homework questions, but he left before that, and a few other ideas, could be worked in.

MOST of the regualar members here have agreed not to give out answers, and many of us will also advice new users not to do so, where and when possible.

As for an overall policy, In theory I like it, but with the types of qiestions we get here, it would not work so well in practice.

Therapsis, we just do what we can to promote this little corner of free speech combined with discretion, and except for a very few who enjoy showing off their “knowledge” it works pretty well for the most part.

p.s. If someone does give away the answer, there are a few of us that will reply with feasable but false answers to the same question..hehe, which puts it back on a level field

Therapsis - this is an EXCELLENT idea! I have always hated to see HW questions answered with the direct answer. I like the idea of show your work and we will guide you.

i did once get blasted by a user for refusing to give an answer and instead provided questions to think about.

The user who gave the answer and blasted me said he/she grew up in a big family and all the children sat around the kitchen table and worked on their HW and they helped each other. When I asked her/him to define help…they never responded. Probably cuz one the parents would have whacked someone up side the head OR two, they were all poor students and gave each other the wrong answers anyway.

Sometimes it depends on the question. Also, no one really knows if people decide to even listen to what our reply is on their questions on Help.com.
