Many photographers start out doing wedding photography and/or studio portraits, because that is what is most in demand. You can also try selling stock photography on the web at a place like this: http://www.shutterpoint.com/Sell-Phot…

A photographer is a very broad description of the possible carreers that involve taking photographs. You could be anything from a school photographer, going to a new school everyday and taking hundreds of pictures, to a paparazzi stalking celebrities for the one exposing photo, to a news photographer send to (sometimes dangerous) places where something newsworty happened, to an artist going where you want to go and photographing a specific subject for an exposition of your works when you are finished (maybe years later). The pay depends on what kind of job it is, mostly what quality photo you have to deliver and how much insecurity of work hours, traveling and potential danger is involved. If you work freelance or as an independent artist, it’s likely that you won’t make much the first years you work, yet may earn a lot if your work is exceptional. If you work a regular 9 to 5 job, you get paid decently but not very much. If you work for a news agency, your pay will depend on how much travelling and danger you agree to. As a paparazzi or as a freelance news photographer, your pay is directly linked to what kind of photo’s you manage to make.
