Doberman Pinschers-Terribly misunderstood, or mean in general?

I know it depends on how you train it, but I have two Dobermans, and, judging by the way people look at them and the way they react when I tell them I have two Dobermans, most people think they’re nasty guard dogs. I believe they are misunderstood, as I have two, and they’re as sweet as a Lab or Golden Retriever. What do YOU think? Any stories that relate to this?

They are definately misunderstood. I know from experience. The only reason why many (not most) are mean is because people see them as vicious and train them to be mean. It’s all about the owner. Mean dog = mean owner. =)

You are so right, Debrad! (: It’s very true, too. ^^ -nod- Yes, people with Pit Bulls experience the same thing, I’m quite sure.

I think dobermans are misunderstood. definately. I grew up with one, and she was the sweetist dog ever. she was my dog though, and they protect their owners. They are guard dogs, its been bread into them. If they have the proper training and proper conditions in which to live they can be the best dogs in the world. I think they are misunderstood yes, but also alot of people who own them do it because they think its cool and not because they respect the breed, and never learn how to care for and train them. That is when people get bit and the dog has to be put down. Its sad, but I love them, the are my favorite dogs, perhaps because of their loyalty.
