If the South stopped slavery, it would kill the economic condition that was created what with the big plantations and all… they needed the slaves to keep going.

When Slavery was political issue back in the 19th century it was more of socio-economical and political issues more than anything.

In the south, they needed slaves in order to maintain their agrarian society. Moreover their elitist/feudal society. The issue of slavery was also important in the context of the census and population representation. (Note the 3/5 Act). The South which wanted to extend their power in the Congress always wanted new territories to be slave territories in order to increase their voting strength. (this is in reference to the Democratic Party)

On the other hand, the North was more of a industrial zone. Their needs were differnt,a nd thus they were represented by a different Party (Whigs and then the Republican) They wanted to stop slavery so that they could have a majority of the vote in Congress.

So you see slavery was more of a political power play between two distinct ideologies and political parties.

The major question involving slavery was whether or not to include the slaves in the population. Southern states wanted to include slaves in the population because it would get them more representation in the House of Representatives. The north said that because slaves couldn’t vote, they shouldn’t be counted in the population. With the slave trade, if the South stopped slavery, it would ruin their economy because they had the slaves work on plantations. The question about the population was resolved with the 3/5 compromise which allowed 3/5 of slaves in a state to be included in that states population. The slave trade was resolved with a compromise that said Congress couldn’t outlaw the slave trade for at least 20 years and that the northerners could return runaway slaves.
