Don’t eat at night and you won’t have any dreams. You’ll just have a plain boring sleep.

I usually don’t eat at night & haven’t been in years. I still dream.

I find I have the worst dreams when I am under some kind of stress… be it good or bad. Usually it happens when I am overtired. I guess the thing I try to do is get on a regular sleep pattern so that I go to bed at a certain time and wake up at a certain time. Another thing I have tried is cracking the window open a bit… the fresh, cool, night air sometimes helps… although it may be more difficult if you have a roommate. Melatonin is a good alternative sleep aid. 3 mg under the tongue helps me to sleep through the night. Hmmm maybe have a cup of tea and do something relaxing or soothing before you prepare to go to sleep. I try not to watch something too horrific or dramatic (news included) before I get my Zzzzzs. Best luck to you! :)

Last thing you should do is stress about it.

Maybe try sleeping in a different room or sleeep opposite the side of the bed you usually do. bring a stuffed animal you can spoon while you are sleeping.

One of the few things that’s known for sure about dreams is that you will have more vivid and lucid dreams when you haven’t been sleeping enough or well enough. So if you’ve just started getting good sleep (maybe you’ve been stressed so you haven’t slept well or you’ve had a lot of work, so you’ve been up late), just wait it out. If it continues I would go to the doctor. There may be something chemically wrong with your brain causing these horrible dreams.

It’s weird, I had a dream about driving last night where I was going too fast and my vision was all weird, kind of like projector film going too fast and when I crashed, I thought I was dreaming, so I pinched myself (like in the movies), but my dream-self wouldn’t wake up. It was bizarre.

My mom was a certified diagnostician and I learned a lot about these issues from her. Nightmares can be caused by emotional stress. Have you also experienced memory loss or tiredness during the day? If so, your body may be responding to an overload of stress in your conscious life.

Look at your awake life right now. Are you eating less or more than usual, having trouble getting to sleep or waking up, more tired than you usually are, or anxious? Have you had irrational fears that come and go unexpectedly? If so, you may have an anxiety or panic disorder. If you don’t have any of these symptoms during the day, you probably don’t though. Can you tell me more of what goes on during the day while you are awake?

Please tell me about your general sleeping position. i.e. on your back, stomach, side etc.

The best sleeping position is to lie down on your right side. Your room should be pitch black, so block out any artificial light sources, like VCR’s/DVD players, digital alarm clocks etc. Remember that the human body is timed to operate by day and tuned to rest at night.. in synch with the light cycle from the sun. Make sure there are not too many unnatural noises coming into the room (e.g. traffic from cars going by), and on the flip side, consider playing some soft ambient music before going to bed as an experiment.

You could also consider reading up about lucid dreaming and how you can take control of some dreams, then you can do some cool stuff like flying and mucking about. If you’re a spiritual type of person say a prayer before bed, and even if you’re not, just say one anyway. :)

Peace.

i have really horrible bad dreams. some based on realty, some just based on fuckedup-ness.
my therapist told me once if you cant beat em, join em, so to speak. she had me write down the dreams when they happened, then read through them again during the day somepleace where i felt safe, but write different endings to them. ones where i succeded, or got away, or…wasnt the coal..man.. etc etc. sounds totally loopy, but it actually did work. its like embedding into your subconscious the ending you want to happen, and not letting the dream control you. try it, it might work for you:)

other than that…erm…dont eat cheese. supposedly that gives nightmares too

It would appear that you have unresolved issues deep down and these are manifesting in your dreams. For your own sake, you have to forgive the man who hurt you.. trust in destiny and fate, because he will get what is coming to him. By his actions it was as if he lit a fire that spread around him and then he lost his sight.

Take care of yourself and be good.

Sister I wish I could say I understand, but the truth is I can’t. As a guy, I only feel rage and it makes my blood boil, and if I was there I would have sent him to his grave.

You need to get help, you need to see a counsellor of some kind, speak to your doctor they should be able to refer you to a specialist who knows all the right questions to ask and help you deal with the trauma on a personal level. I’m sorry I can’t help some help other way. :(

troublesome dreams usually happen when there is some sort of problem in your waking life.

take a step back and try to figure out what’s really bothering you. it can be anything big or small, like a boyfriend break up or failing high school. i might be spcific or general, such as fearing spiders or fearing death itself. when you figure out what this fear/problem is, your next step is to confront it.

see a professional psychiatrist. they know how to deal with these situations, and give you peace of mind.

Thanks again everyone. & to those who said it might be the result of not getting enough sleep… that very well may be the case. with school starting I def hadn’t had as much time to sleep when I am studying/going out/going to class all the time. I didn’t remember my dream last night so I hope that is a good sign!

Nightmares.

Like every other person, I’ve had my share of bad dreams but it’s never been a problem. Since childhood I haven’t been getting them very often.

But for the last month or so I have had a bad dream almost every night that I can remember. Sometimes it’s dumb stuff like a guy whom I thought I was in love with coming out as gay (lol, I know it’s stupid but in dreams when something hurts it really hurts). Other times they are weird dreams, but I get a horrible feeling from them. Like a couple of nights ago I had a dream where I was driving really fast on the high way but my preception looked looked like a shattered mirror & the road was upsidedown & winding. Very stressful.

Then last night my roommate had to wake me up because she heard me whimpering & talking. I remember that I was having a terrifying & lucid dream too complicated to go into but let’s just say it involves being burried alive.

I am so desperate I almost want to tell my doctor I’m an insomniac so that he will prescribe me sleeping pills.

Is there any way to stop these on my own?
