What do you call (in literary terms) the noise a cow or a duck or a cat makes?

Its not onomatopoeia, its got a more technical name than that!

Usually, you just say ‘cry’ or ‘call,’ depending on what noise it is making. Some animals have specific words. Cows low. Cats mew (I’ve seen it written in stories before, I think). And ducks, believe it or not, still quack.

Similarly, sheep bleat and birds chatter.

Not necessarily onomatopoeia, but it has the same effect.

I have only heard it called “animal onomatopeia.” I even checked out a list of rhetorical and literary terms I have and cannot find anything.

There are really cool lists on the web of different sounds according to location in the world: http://www.flat33.com/bzzzpeek/index1…

Cats and Cows make a “lowing” sound, ducks make a “calling” sound.

Why do you think they say to use a Duck “CALL” when “calling ducks? But really which one is it? My Dad used to say that before a storm cows would lay on the ground and “LOW” (”MOO” as some would say). Instead he would say that they are, “lowing in the field.”

To be honest, I have no idea. The duck call may have something to do with hunting, but I don’t understand the lowing thing. I just blame it on the English language and move on, haha.

Actually, I’m not English. I’m Canadian. I’m just studying here for the time being. But yeah, agreed.

No, can’t say I have, as I’m from Toronto and have only gone so far north as Peterborough. That, and I’m not too into fishing to be perfectly honest, haha.
