Computer won’t shut down.

Running Windows XP on my PC. Lately, if I try to shut down, after the Windows shutting down screen disappears, the screen goes blank, the two DVD drives on my PC light up and continue to spin indefinitely, and the computer never powers down. Have used system restore to reset it as far back as two months, but no change. Anybody got any ideas? I’m woried the hard drive might be ready to crash.

Well, turning off the power doesn’t do any harm (thou if it can be avoided, it should be) Its better to cut the power then to leave the computer runing all day and night.

actually, leaving the pc going may shorten the fan life, but more damage is done to electronics gennerally when the power is cut on and off.

When all else fails- unplug it. However Plug it into a surge protector first. It should protect it (mostly)

I would suggest that you go to the “POWER MANAGEMENT” icon and go from there. From Windows95 and on up have a “POWER MANAGEMENT” Application.

1. Go to “START” button.
2. Go to “SETTINGS”.
3. Double click on “CONTROL PANEL”.
4. Double Click on on “POWER MANAGEMENT”.
5. Go from there.

You haven’t been in your BIOS (Basic Input Output System) have you? If you have or anybody else has your problem maybe located there as. Do the instruction part first, if that does not do it then go to the BIOS and see if that needs adjustment.

hold down the power off button until it shuts off.
