It sounds like you might not have enough RAM. Do you have at least 256 MG of RAM? The game will also run much better if you have at least a 2 GHz processor. Sometimes, even if you have all this, your computer can run slow because it’s accumulated some viruses. If I were you, I’d run a virus scan to make sure that everything is running right.

When I first installed Sims 2, I didn’t have enough RAM and I was having the same problem that you describe. For me, getting a better system fixed it. But if you have 256 RAM and a 2 GHz processor and it’s still not working, I would definitely try installing a patch, like kev4238 suggests. You can download the patch here: http://thesims2.ea.com/update/

If you don’t get results here, those in the official game forums are probably more familiar with such issues and can likely give you the help you need.

From the official EA forums: “Q: Is The Sims 2 compatible with Windows Vista? A: Yes! The Sims 2 and its expansion packs run well on Windows Vista. If there is a problem, it’s mostly likely due to the Vista support of your graphics card. (See more details below). Here’s a link to the full FAQ on known system requirements issues: http://thesims2.ea.com/help/detail.ph…
