school help: job dilemma. - Help.com

job dilemma.

kind of.
So I had a really good interview today with a property management company and the pay is what I am looking for. The position is for an administrative position, pretty simple work.
Last week I went on a interview for a receptionist position at one of the top ad agencies in the nation. (I went to school for advertising) This is a great opportunity for me to get my foot in the door. The pay is a pay cut for sure, but there are many promotional opportunities after 3 months. Nothing is set in stone yet for either position. The advertising job is what I really want and I think I will benefit from it in the long run. So I guess I answer my own question, go for the job that I want and that will make me happy, even if it is less pay at the moment. The only reason why this dilemma came up is because the head of HR e-mailed me and wanted my professional references so she can contact them. That means they are very interested, right? They wouldn’t waste their time contacting references if they weren’t serious about hiring me into the position, right? I just don’t want to get all excited just to be let down.
My other dilemma is that what if I get offered the property management before I hear back from the ad agency, then what do i do. AHH sometimes having options can work against you.

Yep, sometimes having choice can be complicated but it is nice to have the choice! The fact that they are taking up references is positive and I think that you have answered your own question. To go for the one that will enjoy. There is nothing worse that being stuck in a job that you do not enjoy. Should the property one offer you a position you can always ask for some time to consider it. I hope it works out for you.

L.O.L.!!
Eeeyeah! I agree about the options…..
To answer your question about the Professional References…
the answer is “Yes” you are on the very short list for
“You’re Hired”. I would wait for the Ad Job’s final decision and
yes you may loose the Property Management position but hey…

You only live……once?

I would take the job at the ad agency, as long as you can get by with the pay they are offering to start. In the long run you will be happier.

One additional note:

In my other posts to you…I forgot to add the following
link:

http://vault.com/index.jsp

Research your Ad Agencies through this portal. I think a
three month Gold membership is.. either $15 or $45 but
well worth it. You can find out what that position pays
as well as if the bosses are……anal retentive (employee
reviews).

It also will alert you during your interview if the employer
is trying to snow ball your salary. If the position pays $100k
per year and he/she is trying to hook you on $50k…..

Well…it will be up to you if you could live on that but the
irritation of knowing that your co-workers piggy banks are
bursting at the seams while your’s is a mid-night sink drip
could be demoralizing to say the least….

Great Job and Best of Hope for ya!

i worked in tv for over 20 years, the last half of it in management. when i was still in the post-production side of things, i worked with ad agencies almost every day. only about 1 in 20 producers really new tv because there was so much emphasis on print. but even entry-level assistants in the largest agencies were allowed to sit in on editing sessions and add their two cents–but only when we were working on pitch videos (presentations for the agency to pitch to potential clients).

on the managment side, i hired around 20 people a year. our HR dept. was small so i did my own calls to references. the fact that they called back requesting the refs is good; it’ll be an even better sign when you hear from your references that they have actually been contacted. i only contacted refs on the final 3 or 4 applicants, and sometimes a good reference can put one applicant over the top (euphamistically you guys) if two people are equally qualified. a manager wants competent employees, but also ones who will show up on town and not hop to another job after 6 months. recruitment and training are time consuming.

either way, hold out for the company you really want. and find out everything you can about their client base. jobs like the property mgnt one will always be around for an intelligent young woman. but if you find work you really love, you don’t have anything to escape from on weekends and life is much more satisfying.

thanks for the post! it makes me hopeful, i know my references will be great, I know they only have great things to say.
I know this is a job that I really want and will love and I totally agree with you last statement a job shouldn’t be a place where you just want to escape from on the weekends!
thank you!
