HMM I DONT REALLY KNOW

It sounds like you might not have enough RAM. Do you have at least 256 MG of RAM? The game will also run much better if you have at least a 2 GHz processor. Sometimes, even if you have all this, your computer can run slow because it’s accumulated some viruses. If I were you, I’d run a virus scan to make sure that everything is running right.
When I first installed Sims 2, I didn’t have enough RAM and I was having the same problem that you describe. For me, getting a better system fixed it. But if you have 256 RAM and a 2 GHz processor and it’s still not working, I would definitely try installing a patch, like kev4238 suggests. You can download the patch here

Hello Shelia,

I have a few suggestions and links. I don’t know anything about Sims but I know a little about computers. Download Belarc Advisor and run it. It will tell you what’s in your computer such as Ram, Processor Speed, so forth and so on. It will better help those whom need to know this info to guide you to a great outcome.

Here is Belarc: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Hope this helps.

Sheila,

RAM is short for Random Access Memory. Think of it as a storage, or your hard drive. Now when you install something, save something or download something to your computer it is stored in your hard drive. But when you run that software or file, it transfers the data to a temporary storage which is the RAM. You can have thousands of gigabytes of hard disk space, but if you have low RAM, softwares like the Sims would become slow because they take most of the RAM memory. To check your Ram memory and everything else, use the link InfoPRO gave above. :)
