Where can I talk to people who really know computers?
I am stuck in a position of knowing too much and knowing too little about computers. I am a nerd, so by the time I get stuck on something there isn’t a whole lot of people available who can answer my questions.
(ex) I want to make my old laptop into an over-featured alarm. This is what I want to happen: I want to have it automatically wake from standby with the screen darkened. Then, I want it to slowly brighten my screen and have music of my selection quietly start playing and gradualy increase. My issue is with the screen-brightness. How can I have it start off darkened? How can I control it to slowly brighten?
Then I have less advanced questions that I just can’t seem to solve.
(ex) I want to have my computer run on linux, but I can never seem to get wireless internet configured. I don’t know what I am doing wrong, and all the tutorials I come to fail me right from the begining. (within a few steps the computer will complain and say I that I can’t do what I’m trying to)
This isn’t a tech site, so I guess this is mostly just a complaint. I want to meet someone more nerdy then me. (I go to my computer science teacher, the programing teacher, etc. I stump them. I talk to my friends and they are about as technical as my parents.)

yeah.. my boyfriend built his own computer… about 3 grand worth.. and is still going at it… i will have an issue and he will come over… type in some command.. and all fixed… lol… too smart for his own britches… lol..
I can use either with online services but none are activally running
However, I currently don’t have linux on my computer (Wireless in a nessesity, so after a week of everyone whining at me for taking up space in the living room I gave up and re-installed Windows XP) I plan to re-install it when I’m not as dependent on my computer (I have a huge online class to get finished and not enough time to get it finished, I have school, etc.) Since I’m having difficult with basic functions I’m assuming I’m going to have a lot more to learn.
Honestly- sites like that have 2 results: either they speak gibberish, or they don’t answer my questions. The places that answer my questions are nearly always forums- other people asking the same questions I am. But the more I do, the fewer people have my questions.
Are you using SUSE with the wireless internet problem? I’ve had multiple problems with SUSE and wireless internet in the past, and my current solution is to reconfigure it every time I start up my laptop (not fun). So… yeah. It’s not just you.
Only two worked with with networking at all. Mandrivia and Gentoo. Both had their issues though. Mandrivia doesn’t even recognize my wireless hardware. Gentoo took some work just to get a direct connection working.
So really- I need to just sit down and work with it.
(oh- but gentoo does recognize my wireless hardware. I do think there MIGHT be an issue though because it lables it as a LAN port instead of a wireless card- but I read somewhere that it shouldn’t cause any problems)
If your having problems with linux you need to go to the forums of the distro that your using. Remember these people like command line so there may be a lot of copy paste involved.
As for your laptop you need a program wrighten to do this and theres a few places that you can get it. The question is how big is your wallet. They make programs and charge for there services and that is what your going to need to make your idea work. Hope this helps :-)
A great place to find know-it-all people about technology is a local (or any college) college that has Computer Science and Computer Engineer majors. If you have access to the college (a ride or able to walk there) then go and talk with one of the computer science/engineering professors. Ask if you could meet some of the students. You may even just be able to find a contact for faculty/staff online who you could email. I’m sure someone out there would be more than willing to make a connection and help you out.
If you are not college age yet then this would be a great opportunity to start a working relationship with where you would like to go in the future.
I thbnk you can also find a local L.U.G.(Linux User Group) in your area that can help you with your Linux. But Gentoo is a more ‘advanced’ system and not good for getting your feet wet on trying Linux. Debian and Ubuntu have a much larger user base and will have more people that know it that could help you.

If you invest in a C++ compiler you can write your own programs. Then you can use windows or Linux..

I actually had more things work with Gentoo then anything else. The other things I tried (Ubuntu was the worst) kept doing stupid things. The only issue I had with Gentoo was the wireless.
