computer help: My computer has crashed and i’m pretty sure it is a virus. - Help.com

My computer has crashed and i’m pretty sure it is a virus.

I’m using windows vista and can’t find my recovery dvd. As soon as my computer turns on it comes to the screen where it says windows didn’t start correctly due to a malfunction. Its where I can choose safe mode or whatever. I’ve tried loading windows with safe mode and from a successful last boot up attempt and my screen always turns blue and it says “dumping memory cache” and immediately shuts off and restarts into that same cycle. I’m at a loss.

Could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software . This problem can be solved by uninstalling new softwares, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes . From http://fixit.in/bluescreenofdeath.html

I agree with Fl, you need to replace your memory card or cards. They are cheap and you could upgrade to more memory as well.

You should be able to check your memory and hard disk but booting into your bios menu. You can enter it buy entering the proper code imediatly after you see the splash screen. The code is usually F1, F10, DEL or something similar. It usually gives the code key at the bottom of the splash screen. There is usually a way to test your hard disk without damaging any data.

Once you get your computer straightened out use these free applications:
Actually you should have suite of protective applications. Grisoft AVG, I’ve used since I first built my first computer. I have used AVG for about seven years, it has kept my system virus free so far. In fact it has intercepted virus’ that have tried to be put on my system. Next I was introduced to Zone Alarm firewall. One caveat!: Do not use the Windows XP or Vista firewall. Because it is a one way firewall, meaning the Windows firewall can keep virus’ from entering your computer, but it does not keep information from getting out once a virus succeeds in being planted on your computer. Zone Alarm on the other hand keeps virus’ from entering your computer and if they do they keep the information from being transmitted out to whomever. To test if your protect for virus’ is working you might want to go to a place called:
http://www.grc.com/ ; Gibson Research Corporation. Go to the appropriate page for testing your ports. All of these applications I have used so far successfully.

I attempted the recovery partition using the F8 key at the splash screen and it brings me to an advanced startup menu. It gives me a menu with the standard three “Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/ Networking, and Safe mode w/ command prompt”. Also a menu of “Enable Boot logging, Enable low-res vid, Last known config, directory services restore mode, debugging mode, disable auto restart, and disable driver sig enforcement” as well as starting windows normally. I’ve tried all of the options and again i keep coming to the blue screen where it dumps memory. I’m at a loss.

chrissynot1, if you want to do a clean install just put your system disk in to your CD drive and reboot your system from the CD drive. Then follow the prompts to install on partition C and answer yes to format the drive. You will need the 25 digit license number found somewhere on your computer…

Good luck

this is totally funny… since when do viruses and memory have anything in common!!!!!!! i have the same problem about once a year because i refuse to run with a virus program… they attract viruses. usually you would run the restore by pressing f10, or f11 depending on the computer…. if the virus has entered your restor files you already know this wont work. so contact microsoft windows…. the phone number is on the website… tell them your computer has been taken over and they will mail you the cd for free just so you wont go buy a mac. and as for you guys telling them to go buy a new drive or new memory… get off here.. .go learn something and then come back and give real advise!!
