I’m in a really competitive English program that requires a lot of reading, a five-page paper, and a one-on-one session with the professor every week. My quarter so far:
Week One- My dad was in the hospital
Weeks Two and Three- I was adjusting to a new medicine and feeling really depressed
Week Four–I was really sick
Week Five– I slept through my one-on-one
With all this going on, I’ve been getting Bs on all my papers. For most people, a B isn’t a big deal, but like I said, my program is very competitive. Now, every time I start to work on my papers, I start having panic attacks because I’m terrified of getting more Bs. I realize that if I don’t write the paper, I will get an F for the assignment, which is much worse than the B. Still, I’m terrified every time I open up Word and try to write.
Any suggestions on how to overcome this panic?

I’m sorry to hear that you have been having such a tough time. First thing you should do is talk to your professor and ask him to give you some leeway on your papers due to personal problems. Perhaps you can even ask him to regrade your paper or maybe you can just rewrite your papers all together for a higher grade. If you explain your situation and he or she is an understanding professor, I’m like you, a B is very detrimental to my grade-point-average and will continue to be all throughout my academic life. Keep writing the papers as best as you can. Some tips to overcome this panic is to, like I said, talk to your professor. Also, relax and listen to some music when you start your paper. Hey, you can even write a rough draft on paper and proofread it, then type it out and proofread it again.
Meditation during the day can also help relieve stress and anxiety. Maybe you can meditate before writing a paper. I’m worried, are you still depressed? You said that you have medicine to help you, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re seeing someone. You don’t have to see professional help for your depression although it might be wise to see psychologist, not a psychiatrist as they tend to hand out medicine like it’s candy. I hope that everything goes well.

dude grade-grubbing is totally worth it and an invaluable skill for any career you persue. Rekaru is dead-on…also don’t be afraid to get progressively firm with your prof…but dont start it that way or you won’t get nearly as far..
with all this going on i think its okay to live with b’s im not saying that b’s are excellent but they are good when yur going through so much stay strong and when you put yur mind to it it will all just come to u

Oh, my god, the idea that ‘I have to get to work right now, I have so much to do, I’ll never get it done!’ scares me so much that I never start! I’ve been trying to deal with it all year, I don’t know what’s gotten into me.
I would suggest writing a schedule, like, in a half hour I’ll have done this much, etc, and be really easy about it. Overestimate the time you think it’ll take you. Then you’ll find that you’re ahead of schedule very soon which should give you the confidence to continue…

Specifically on the panic on opening microsoft word:
So you open it, stare at the blank page, and feel the panic welling up. First write the title. Then when you have to start writing and the real panic comes, shut your eyes, and breathe in slowly and deeply, then out slowy. Do it as long as you need to. Think ‘breathing in the Calm’ ‘breathing out stress’. Work from your feet upwards un-tensing your muscles which you’re probably clenching. Do this for as long as it takes to get over the panic. Have a little internal dialogue with yourself if it helps. “come on, it’s just a paper. It’s not worth this. People have much worse to deal with. I have to get a sense of perspective and make a start. I can always go back and change it if I get off to the the wrong start, but I must write something just to get going….”
(That’s just what I told myself! It worked…)

B’s are a good grade and if your happy with that then stay with it if not try to improve with spark notes you can find them in almost any bookstore.I hope your dads ok.What are you taking medicine for?
Thanks for all the advice. Today I had my one-on-one and talked to my professor. I barely finished my paper, and I’m not sure if it’s an “A,” but I feel a lot better. I asked how she thought I was doing in class because I feel like I’m struggling. She told me that while my weekly papers aren’t where they should be, my participation and “big” papers are excellent. She also told me that since this is such an individualized program, we can work around my family and medical issues.
bjk60-Thanks for the website, but it seems to be aimed at high school and younger students. I’m a sophomore in college.
For the other questions about my health, I am on a medication for bipolar disorder. I am seeing a counselor fairly regularly and a psychiatrist sporadically (that mess is a post for another day). I’m handling the depression better, but the panic is more intense than when I wasn’t on this medication.
KateMonster maybe you should have your dr. adjust the perscription for you and maybe that will help as far as the depression goes why don’t you try these herbs St.Johns Wart, Ginko and try smelling some lavendar because that will help you calm down, breathe easier and then you might be able to focus a little bit more. Perscriptions seem to do more damage to the body then the doctors will tell you.
which cut down on distractions and helped me to focus. At least this way, while I’m still dreading having to stare at that horrifying blank screen, I don’t have an easy out.
