My cat Lucy cries a lot.

I just got her about a month ago. She came from a family that had children and a few other cats so the transition to my one bedroom apartment and just me has been difficult for her. Also not long after she moved in with me my uncle passed away and I had to leave her for over a week so I could go home to be with my family (don’t worry, I had someone coming in to check on her).

But she cries a lot. I’m certain it is because she is extremely lonely as I work everyday and find I’m not home often. I love on her as much as possible when I am home, and she sleeps next to me every night…

The problem is when she wakes up she wants attention and will lay there next to my head and cry and cry and cry. I used to pick her up and shut her out of the bedroom… but then I read this article that said not to do that because any attention given at that point will increase the behavior.

Has anyone had this problem? Does anyone have any suggestions? I’ve been considering getting another cat so that she has a playmate, but it costs at least $60 just to adopt one! I can handle the month to month costs of food and vet visits, but can’t imagine paying another $60 just to get a cat.

Is anyone in Chicago wanting to give away a cat?

Any comments would be helpful.

Perhaps you can get one for free from someone giving them away at your local store maybe or even a small dog. My cat used to get really lonely then we got a Japanese chin (dog) and they play all the time together.

I have no idea about Chicago, but out here in the country there’s free kittens everywhere lol. Maybe you could check with your friends to see if they know of any.

That’s the way it is here. whenever I see pets for free.. my mom always turns them down because we already have two indoor animals. T-T

I had a cat that started doing that EVERY night… so finally I started letting him outside at night, and letting him in in the mornings. He would go out every night and “party with his friends” then come home every morning…until one day he didn’t come home. Your cat may also be in heat, I could be wrong.

A free cat is going to cost you the same amount of money as an adopted one assuming you are doing your job as a pet owner and having them vaccinated.

Adoption costs cover these expenses and are often cheaper than if you get a free cat and then take him/her to the vet.

Check with your local shelters. Their adoption costs are usually reasonable because they want to find homes for the animals. Pet stores are trying to make a profit, so they will generally cost more.

And if you do find a free cat, I’m almost positive that it is free because it has never had a visit to a vet.

Oh and yes. I’ll second Lrenah on this post as well. Your cat may be in heat if she has not been spayed. So, how to solve this annoying problem? Get her spayed. If this is the reason for her crying and constant need for attention then it will not go away. She’ll continue the behavior until she’s “satisfied”.

In theory when you adopt a cat, they get fixed, so…but if she isn’t she’ll cry a lot…

My cat cries when my Fiance is out of town, I leave lights on for her so she can run around the apartment and explore when I’m sleeping…my Fiance always gets mad when he comes home because he wants to know why all these lights are on…haha, but it makes her feel better.

yeah, she is spayed.

i guess it’s just a lonely thing for her and i’m going to have to give her more time to adjust or get her a playmate. time will tell.

thanks for the help!
