friends help: My friend is going deaf. - Help.com

My friend is going deaf.

What happened was that she was in a car crash with another one of her friends (she was the passenger). when they hit the car she told me her neck kinda wiplashed a little. and ever since then she said in her left ear she can hear anything at all, and in her right ear she can hear really low tones or if she does it hurts. she also said that she was getting a little vertigo too. now this crash happened last thursday she said, and today she just went for a cat scan and will hopefully find out whats wrong and if it can be cured. what i want to know is what is wrong with her becuase asking her to tell me what the doctor told her would make me feel bad that she has to repait what the docot said (especially if its bad news) and i dont want to put her in that situation. so if anyone could help me figure out what is wrong and if something could be done plz post here.

i don’t know. from what i can tell there aren’t a lot of medical professionals on this site. we can listen and give advice. or we can guess. there may be a medical chat site that’s more helpful.

ok this is very sad but it turns out she has meniere’s disease. idk all about this though all i know is that it is NOT curable, but the sympotoms can be treated. also what ever hearing she has left could be preserved i think but idk. according to her “im going to go deaf.”

Like most incurables it is degenerative (gets worse over time), good news though unlike most incurables your friend is lucky that this will not shorten her life or take away her ability to live a fully interactive social life. The hearing degeneration typically takes years and with modern treatments she may have decades without any real worries. In the end though you are correct, hearing loss is the final result. Not really the end of the world though, many of my friends growing up had complete hearing loss (I have complete hearing loss in one ear and partial loss in the other). It really doesn’t hinder your life the way many hearing people might think it would.

well it seems that her condition has really changed since the last time i posted. all i know is that her hearing isnt good but its not like a normal persons cause she said that her eye doctor said her vision was better then 20/20 (not much, but enough to notice)so that means her eyes are compensationg for her hearing. But thats all i know

When eyesight compensates for hearing loss, or vice versa it’s really just a psychological shift of focus, not an actual biological change. Just because her eyesight became a bit better doesn’t indicate that her hearing is getting worse. Besides, even if her hearing is deteriorating, it may not be the most convenient thing in the world but it’s definitely not handicapping.

That’s what good friends do, we worry about eachother :) Just make sure you don’t become ‘overly sensitive’ to it, when someone else worries more than you about something that affects you in a very personal way it can be frustrating.
