The Weakerthans–my favorite band, has really simple lyrics, but they are deep.
The Eels–really relaxing and bouncy at the same time. makes me feel good :)

For metal, I enjoy Rage Against the Machine (mainstream) and recently found a band called Anger Is A Gift through myspace.

People either love them or hate them, but Dave Matthews Band ‘Stand Up’ album has some really great political lyrics and great beats. I don’t think it sounds much like what they’ve done in the past. Then again, most of his music really has some great messages (aside from the “romantic” tunes). **I will not argue about DMB - these are just suggestions**
